Okay, I just saw the movie Brave with my friends and sister today, the opening day, the 22nd of June. It is a Scottish fairy tale with no romance. The main character doesn't want to get married, and Scotland is SO BEAUTIFUL! And there are Scottish accents. Merida, the main character, is a Princess. She's the first born. More of the responsibility rests on her, and she isn't ready for it.

Merida follows these mysterious blue wisps to a house that almost looks like a hobbit hole, but a woodcarver works there. A woodcarving witch who may help Merida for a price. But alas, dealings with witches never help, and Merida just makes things worse without knowing it. Things get more dangerous and people may die.

Don't worry, the 'spoiler' isn't a spoiler if you've watched all the trailers. I haven't spoiled the big plot twist for you, thankfully. Don't read reviews because they'll spoil it. And don't go on Rotten Tomatoes because the people there are just so picky.

Anyway, I really really really really liked the movie (I added the really's so that I didn't say love), and I want to see it again soon. The soundtrack is so so inspiring, you may really like it.

Has anyone else seen Brave or have any thoughts on it before they see it?

I think it's not yet out here, but I'd love to see it when it does come out! (Thanks for the warning about not going to Rotten Tomatoes, hehe! :D)

I want to see this movie really badly!! It's in the theaters here, but I'm not sure when I'll get to see it :( . I knew immediately it was a movie that I'd enjoy; I love Ireland/Scotland and anything related, and the plot looks good too. Thanks for not posting any real spoilers that ruin the rest of the movie :D !!

For all us Pixar lovers, I am very sad to say that Pixar has finally let me down.

I have been anticipating the movie for a while, and last night I went to see it.

I love Celtic anything, and in that I wasn't disappointed. And the animation was stunning. The piles of hair- animation has come a long way in the hair department, which has been one of the biggest battles, from an animation standpoint. Which is why there is not often much body to hair in animated movies. Wet scenes are also hard, and those were handled well also.

The lines were, in the beginning, hilarious, the Father was epic, and the film score was so moving and filled with Celtic pride. But.... the story lacked depth. It... the story didn't have that Pixar warmth I have come to know and love. It didn't have that strong message that I expect when I go to see a Pixar movie. Yeah, be careful what you wish for, change your destiny, and family is a strong bond that shouldn't be broken, but all of that was rather.... well, it lacked conviction, making it feel like a half hearted attempt at conveying those truths.

What is worse, the movie has multiple shots of nudity, a first for Pixar and, as a matter of fact, for Disney (that I can think of).

I left the theater very thoughtful, but not like I normally do. When I left the theater after watching Cars, I left excited over the way movie trends were turning. I contemplated the strong message portrayed. This time, I left with great remorse over the fact that nudity has now become an acceptable thing to implement into a Pixar film, and what would be next.

I enjoyed certain aspects, but as a whole I was very very torn.

I'm very sad to hear that :( I got so excited when I heard they were coming out with a new movie! If I ever watch it I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD ;)

Thanks for being truthful and sharing your thoughts!

Having seen WALL-E and Toy Story 3, we’ve come to expect vivid, elaborately detailed animation from Pixar. Well, brace yourself. Brave raises the bar. It’s beautiful, beginning to end. Princess Merida’s red hair is a magnificent mess, but Merida’s mother is the animators’ finest achievement — she becomes a fantastically expressive and endearing character. And wait until you see the forest! You’ll swear that you can smell the grass, the mosses, the mist.

Now that, I agree with, totally!!!!!

The rest... I'd say he's stretching, and that's coming from the girl who champions Tangled loudly from every street corner while others tell her she's "stretching" it.

*shrugs * I agree with him that there were some good points, but I am not at all happy with many of the things it chose to portray. Plus, that message he is talking about is, as I said before, very lost in the film. :P

But, that is just my opinion, as it is the opinion of every critic. :D

*was alerted by Brendan that there was an Airianna review around here and has found it* ^_^

I went to see this with Jordan Smith & family ( :dieshappy: ) on Saturday, and I concur with Airianna. Art is off the charts; story is down, but not a flop.

The animation is unbelievable. I don't usually come out of a Pixar film marveling at the animation (with the exception of Wall-E). Brave is beyond anything I've ever seen from them - the hair and scenery is especially vivid. Additionally, the score is one of Pixar's more memorable tracks. Patrick Doyle is a new face for Pixar, and he did wonderfully! Very vibrant Scottish feel.

The story, however, as not as strong or as deeply intertwined as I usually hope for from Pixar, although it was decent. The morality, on the other hand, was definitely lower than I'd expect from Pixar. The crude humor (mostly nudity) was very high compared to Pixar's usual fare, and I wasn't very impressed with the portrayal of the father. I'm sad to see Pixar play into the "father is a bumbling oaf, mother is the one that calls the shots" trend in Hollywood. I saw one reviewer who bemoaned that this is the first time we've seen true stereotypes from Pixar (rebellious princess, bumbling father), and I think that's a valid argument.

This all did not ruin the movie for me. I still enjoyed it. But I hope it's not a trend for Pixar.

I LOVED BRAVE. :dieshappy: (and the adorable little kid sitting two rows up who was making cute comments all the way through it. )

So it wasn't Toy Story. I didn't go wanting another Toy Story, I went for a fantasy story about a girl who ends up causing all sort of trouble to get her own way and ends up turning her mother into a bear. Yeah, the nudity and little bit of crude humor they could have left out, or at least, the scene where the guys are coming down from the tower. But ya'll are only complaining because it's Pixar. If it was Dreamworks, there wouldn't be near so much complaining going on. Pixar's allowed to do stuff different just as much as anyone else.

And anyhow... was that a Gaelic lullaby that's sung during Merida's flashback?

I went and saw it today, and came home talking with a scottish accent. ;)

I loved it. It was gorgeous! It was also hilarious. I laughed sooooooo hard! The nudity isn't in your face or sexualized or anything, so it didn't bother me. LOVED the gorgeous Celtic sound track. LOVED all the scottish clan chiefs.

The mother/daughter bond message was beautiful. I took my little sister to go see it, but was kinda worried it was going to be just fluff... it wasn't. I LOVE movies where the hero/heroine IS wrong! And they really DO learn something that isn't shallow. Merida learned a very difficult lesson to take to heart and I appreciated that.

It was NEARLY perfect, however....

Fergus disappointed me. He was a loving Dad and all, but he was the classic goofy/half-witted father type, and as such was not realistic, nor respectful, although it isn't so blatant as to ruin the movie by any means.

I LOVED the way the animals were done. :D The horse (unlike most disney horses) moved and looked like a horse! So did the bears. :)

And Merida's hair...it was super cute on her, but it was so amazingly alive, I kept thinking through the whole thing, "I'm so glad my hair doesn't look like that, even when it's humid outside."

Go see it, you guys. ;)

No, I'm not. I left disappointed because it was Pixar, but my issues with the film/story line/weak morals/magic portrayal, have nothing to do with who made it. I'm not a Pixarite, though I like several Pixar films.

I just watched Brave last week and I thought it was great. Some stuff was a little weird (witch, magic), but overall I thought it was equal with some of the other Pixar movies. Definitely better than some they have done. I thought a couple scenes they could have done without, but other than that it was great.

It's actually coming out in the cinemas here next week, I think. But I'm not going to go to see it, I might borrow it later in the year when it comes out on DVD, we'll see.

I watched Brave last Saturday and enjoyed it. I wasn't so impressed with some of the content (witches, spells), however, and the statement, "You can change your destiny/you're in charge of your fate" It's inspiring and everything, and although I realize how it is supposed to challenge people to dare and make changes - well, I don't believe it's entirely true.

The animation was certainly amazing - I loved watching Merida's hair. I didn't really care for Merida's mother being changed into a bear.

But I love how (finally!), the independent heroine is wrong! She makes mistakes. She tries to manipulate her parents. And it fails. I feel like a theme like that is really needed now. I didn't appreciate everything about her father - they portrayed him too foolish - but the mom was good.

My two cents.

I enjoyed this movie muchly, though I have to reluctantly admit that it was flawed. The animation and music? Incredible. Plot? It had it's weak points, that is for sure.

The nudity more annoyed me then anything else. It could have been so easily left out, but wasn't. I could have enjoyed Brave more if they left it out.

I also really liked the Mother-Daughter relationship. The struggles Merida went through were realistic, and I left the theatre very much liking the character for all her mistakes and flaws.

I watched this film today with my family. Mother laughed so much, we all did! It was brilliant, I loved it. I definitely have to watch it again!

Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king

Um...*looks at replies* in case you are wondering. Brave was not Pixar's story line. Disney bought Pixar, so now all the stories are Disney made.

I like the Celtic soundtrack, but it had some scenes that shouldn't be there. :book:

Pixar has been an off branch of Disney since the beginning. :)

The Rainbow in the Storm- My Blog

Be careful of your thoughts; guard your mind, for your thoughts become words. Be guarded when you speak, for your words turn into action. Watch what you do, for your actions will become habits. Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you. Instead, He’s opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Works in progress:

The Diegosian Mark, 115,600 words (Preparing for Publication)
The Diegosian Rider, 121,400 words (Finished)
The Diegosian Warrior, 15,000 (In Progress)
