Sorry if a thread already exists about this, but I didn't see it in the search.

Anywho, I have to read Percy Jackson Book 1 for school, but it has been on my reading list for a long time anyway, so it's all worked out! :D

I'm loving book 1 so far and I am definitely going to continue the series.

Has anyone else read the books? Have you seen the movie? What do you think about both of them? Which did you prefer?

I've read half the books and seen the movie. (the books were better, but that's to be expected.)

I thought they were cute...the writing wasn't bad, but I also didn't think they were phenomenal. Kind of the book equivalent of jelly beans vs. a big fat steak. :D

Ew... steak. :P

Anyways, yeah, the writing is a bit too child-like, but it is a book for kids I suppose...

I love the books. :D I actually am amazed by some of the things the author thinks to add to his stories, to be honest. But we aren't talking about the books here, so I will hush up. :D

I enjoyed the movie. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it was fun. Though it is vastly different than the books, I was able to watch it just as a movie, which made me enjoy it as just that. Perhaps this was easier to do because the books weren't a childhood love on my part. :D

I have heard of this before, but I haven't read the books or watched the movie.

I've read the books, but I haven't seen the film yet. My siblings say it kinda strayed away from the main story line though. *shrugs*

The books were excellent.

I also enjoyed the other two series' that are also set in the universe: Heroes of Olympus and The Kane Chronicles.

He might push the "If you think this is fiction, you're wrong" thing, which might confuse young-young readers, but its still good.

The movie...eh, it was okay. It obviously couldn't copy the movie exactly, but, come on! No mention of the Mist, which made a later part of the movie, practically imply that the mortals saw the monsters for what they were - i.e. The lady and Annabeth during the Medusa thing - no Dionysus or Clarisse, Annabeth's hair dark, no Prophecy...

I suppose that is why Alexandra Daddario's - Annabeth - hair is dyed blonde for the Sea of Monsters movie that is coming out in 2013, and why Dionysus and Clarisse are also in the second movie. I'm holding out for a mention of the Mist and the Great Prophecy. (No Prophecy, no hope of PJatO's main arc, no Heroes of Olympus.

Oh, and for those confused by my earleir comment, Heroes of Olympus is a sequel series to Percy Jackson. It is set for 5 books, just like Percy Jackson. As for Kane Chronicles, they make a mention of Percy Jackson at some point in the first novel.

The books were ok - it seemed like the typical "teenage hero discovers powers he never knew he had and goes on a quest with two strange friends related to saving the world and finding his father", but I think it's more for young readers. I really liked the movie, though. :D I know it wasn't true to the books, exactly, but the effects were amazing and the monsters were really cool.

I've read most of the books and saw the movie. Honestly, the books were better; but I loved the movie too, as a separate being. If you imagine that it is it's own movie and NOT based off a book, you enjoy it more. Plus, Sean Bean plays Zeus!!! How much better can you get? XD

Well, I watched this last night. :) It was good. You know when you watch a film, and you think, wow that was fantastic, and you could watch it again. Well, for me, it wasn't one of those, but it was pretty good.

I prefer the book to the movie as Idril said:

The movie rather strayed from the plot To be precise there was no plot. Where was Hades?

He was there - doing his "I am modeling myself after Stargate's Ba'al, and trying not to be funny like in the books, since everyone said that the book's humor was 'kiddie'."
