Have you read Dinotopia, or seen any of the adaptations? And if so, what did you think of them?

I liked the colorful art in the book, but found the story weak and too politically correct. I have a full review of the book on my blog. Meanwhile, the television mini-series was boring, and I recall crude humor, though I can't remember if it had any other content issues.

I was lucky enough to be really young when I read these books, so I didn't even notice the political correctness. I enjoyed them greatly, but I agree that the world could probably use a realism-workover. Lots of the dwellings, in particular, are fantastic but horribly impractical. But you're right--the books are worth reading, if only for the art.

Some of the addional, unillustrated novels (by John Vornholt and Scott Ciencin, amongst others) are cute children's books, kind of at the fun-level of Chronicles of Narnia. I remember liking Lost City, River Quest and Firestorm a lot, and went back to read them again when I was older. ^_^

I actually enjoyed the tv series, though there was an inappropriate scene and the world view was warped. The world itself was really cool though, and there were some very good social development aspect to it, from a fantasy culture building standpoint.

And the Skybacks (always loved this name) were cool.

The story was weak, though, as you pointed out. And I HATE love triangles, with a passion. So that irked me through the whole movie.

That wasn't in the book.

Are they an American series? I haven't read them, and haven't heard of the tv series either.

*was waiting for this review* :D I think I might check this out... and not to worry if I don't feel like reading the text.

Then I would be more disposed to reading the book. :D

Yes, Elanor, I believe it is an American series.

All I really remember in reading Dinotopia is the awesome art and the awesome idea of an island full of dinosaurs. I don't think there really needs to be a major story plot. What the author seems to be doing to me is simply creating a world and allowing the readers to add in the stories where they see fit. He simply uses simple story lines to explore this world. And it's a world worth exploring.

Hoping I'm not stepping on anybody's toes here, but the one part I dislike is the whole evolution thing. I can't say I was surprised though. Still, the illustrations and the way Dinotopia is framed, polished, built up, and history-ed out to wazoo, is amazing.

Also, as far as I've seen, the TV series isn't really worth watching. :P

Oh but I liked the TV series! :D

Probably because I hate the way movies don't give the characters and things time to develop, but anyway.

I've found the book on a library shelf and flipped through it. I loved the beautiful and colorful artwork, and didn't read the text.

I enjoyed the TV series, actually. Course, I've never read the books. *shrugs *

I've seen the TV series so many times. I own it now. Yes, it has a weak story and some not-so-great acting and a messed up worldview, but it's still fantastic. It's very clean for a TV series and the settings are spectacular. I actually like the character growth of the brothers.

'Course, I was a lot younger when I first saw it so I have that little kid perspective of awe still stuck in my head. Last time I watched it, a few weeks ago, I tried to just remember that and not criticize the problems because I wanted to remember loving it so much.

I always knew I liked you, Luke.

I would add the winking smiley, but who knows what it would end up being.
