Post subject:  Fantasy stories to read
I already have read LoTR and the Chronicles of Narnia, and I've started the Ranger's Apprentice, and I want MORE! I like the sort of fantasy that is in a medieval setting with strange and wonderful creatures (TR Apprentice is lacking in the latter department), do you have any suggestions? I seem to be having a hard time finding good books like that...

Have you read The Hobbit or the Silmarillion?

the Inkheart trilogy is probably the best fantasy book I've read besides LOTR.
There is also The inheritance cycle. Its pretty good.

You might also look into some of George MacDonalds works.

Bryan Davis' series Dragons In Our Midst and Oracles Of Fire are some of my all time favorite books. I had some problems with some theology that resulted because of half human, half dragon children, but otherwise I adored the series.

I also loved those two series, along with Mr. Davis' newest book, Song of the Ovulum. :D

However, like Za said, they have a couple theological issues. Oracles of Fire messes with Biblical history a lot. For grounded Christians, this is okay, but for, say, my little sister, it might be confusing. The thing Za mentioned is also a little weird... but the fact that the dragons were sentient beings which had been transformed into humans helps matters a little. :)

Cool, guys! Thanks for the suggestions! I have read 'The Hobbit' and have started 'The Silmarillion', forgot to mention those ones, lol. I just ordered the first 'Dragons In Our Midst' book and have ordered Eragon, can't wait! Thanks again!

I would also recommend the Dragons of Starlight series by Bryan Davis. It is just as good as his more famous Dragon's in our Midst series and subsequent series, but without the theological concerns. :D

A really good fantasy book is the Blood of Kings Trilogy by Jill Williamson. I haven't finished the last book yet due to having trouble getting it from my library, but the first two are really good. :D Book 1 is By Darkness Hid, book 2 is To Darkness Fled, and book 3 is From Darkness Won.

A very well-written and fascinating trilogy is The Chanters of Tremaris. I have a review of it here. Another author to check out is Catherine Fisher (Author of Incarceron and Sapphique and the Relic Master series). Her books are very interesting - some profanity, but otherwise...

Another great author to check out is Patricia McKillip. She has some really beautiful books. The best one (IMO) is The Changeling sea.

And read The Restorer, The Restorer's Son, and The Restorer's Journey by Sharon Hinck. No excuses. Just read it. :rofl:

I enjoyed the Earthsea trilogy by Ursula LeGuin, especially the first two books. The last one was neat, but definitely didn't connect with me as much. I'm not sure I'd rate them as constructively Christian, but they're a great example of an immersive, well-thought-out world, and they're clean (although, if anyone else has read them and has a different rating, I'm all ears).

Thanks! Today the library finally delivered the 8th Ranger's Apprentice book (called Kings of Clonmel, I think). They are neat books, but disappointing if you're like me and want dragons, dwarves, centaurs, minotaurs, etc. Fortunately I still like them and get through them fairly quickly! :book:

Yes, you should! I can recommend the Ranger's Apprentice series. Although it doesn't have many creatures in it other than humans, this series has characters you care about and Flanagan (the author) is very good at weaving humor into his stories. Plus, the Rangers are pretty cool! :dieshappy: :book:
