Robert E. Howard was one of the most influential writers of fantasy fiction. He created characters like Conan the Barbarian, Kull the Conqueror, and Solomon Kane. Have you read any of his stories, and if so, what did you think of them?

I have never read any of his books Jon, but I really really want to read the one with Solomon Kane, I think it looks like a really really good plot! Do you know what it is called?

All the Solomon Kane stories are collected in The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane.

Aaah, cool thanks. I keep going to the library at the moment so I'm going to try and get some really good fantasy novels to read for when I'm away next week. Hopefully they'll stock this! :)

How clean are his books?

It's been awhile since I've read any of them. From what I remember, the content is mild, just violence and occasional mild swearing. However, despite being relatively clean, I do seem to recall the morality in some of them being pretty bad.

Some of his main characters are barbarians, and they act like barbarians. Even if they do have a sense of honor, they’re not paragons of virtue, though I guess his stories are similar in that way to many historical and mythological stories.

Well I may try to read some Solomon Kane when I get the chance.
(I'm reading four books right now as it is.)

I like the idea of a sword-wielding Puritan evil fighter, so that's why I find Solomon Kane so interesting.
I also looked at some of his Conan books but my library had a great big omnibus of it so I didn't check it out.

There is lots of violence, and witchcraft, but it didn't bother me any.

Cool, that doesn't bother me either. I'll go see if I can find it at my library.

Those of you who like Howard's writing might also like Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes.

They're all available at Guntenburg.org.

I liked Tarzan but the sequels were redundant.

You read all 22?

Cool. I'll look those up.

No. I only read 5 or 6 like I said they get really boring.

I'll end up reading the first 4.

What's your favorite Solomon Kane story?

I can't really say. I really like the descriptions in Skulls in the Stars.
