A few nights ago my family finished watching "Pilgrim's Progress: Journey to Heaven" produced by DRC Films. I must say, I was impressed. Usually a story of such epic proportions never have the same effect on screen. However this one really delivered in my view. Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?

I actually have not read the book as yet. But after seeing the movie, I am planning to get it out. My Grandma gave me a brilliant comic book of the story which I loved. (and is currently missing in action... *adds to list of books to track down*) My brother has read the "Little Pilgrim's Progress" and quite enjoyed it.

As there are so many versions and editions of this awesome book, I thought it would be interesting to discuss which versions of either books and movies are better and why, and more importantly what are your favourite parts of the story? Discuss away! :D

I've read one of the comic book versions, which was good. I've also seen a movie version called Dangerous Journey, which was just the narrated text with vivid pictures, and it was good, too.

I loved the book. I loved the depth and richness of the text, and the movie cheapened a lot of that. Especially scripture references. That was why I didn't like it. *shrugs* You should read the book, Aussie. :)

I will read it. :D The second I get a hold of a copy. Nearly every movie based on a book does that, unfortunately. I guess that's a good thing: it will ensure books are better. ;) Although I did appreciate the note from the producer in the special features, asking people for grace as they watch the film, because it would be hard to replicate the awesomeness of the book in 90 minutes. :)

Agreed. I just wish they would have kept some of the text power that was in the book.

At times nothing can replace the power of the written word, no matter how much money is instilled into it. :) The Bible, for example.

You are making me want to read it more and more! *puts down on extremely need these books list*

I've read a version of it before, the A-Beka version. (A-Beka's a homeschool curricula.) Soon I'm going to read the raw and unedited one.

It's really deep. Even with the version, it's really meaningful. That I liked. :)

Abeka is awesome. :D

I'm glad that the modern version is still good, Elly. Sometimes the adapted versions can be a bit... tacky.

I've read it, but I didn't really care for it. As Tolkien would say, "I generally detest allegories." The allegory is too blatant, too obvious almost.

I haven't seen the movie though.

I got around to reading the unabridged version of the book, and I thought it held up well for its age (far better than most pre-1800 novels). It was also fascinating to read a story that has had such an impact on modern culture, even though it is largely forgotten now.

I wrote a full review of it a few years ago: http://jonathangarner.blogspot.com/2013 ... -john.html
