Disney is famous for its animated film versions of various fairy tales like Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Some people love these simple, colorful movies. Some people hate them. Some people are in between, liking a few and disliking a few.

Have you seen any of the Disney fairy tales? If so, what did you think of them? Do have an opinion about the differences between the original fairy tales and the Disney film versions? If you like them, do you have favorites? If you don't like them, what don't you like about them?

Most of the Disney fairytales were improvements over the originals.

(Did anyone but me read Pinocchio? Worst book ever!)

I tried reading Pinocchio... And stopped very quickly. The movie was okay but not memorable.

Some of them were really cute.
I liked the Aladdin, that was sweet. :D
Also, I liked Sleeping Beauty.
I liked Snow White. It was okay.
One of my absolute favorites was Pocohontas 2. The one where she falls in love. It was so adorable. :D
One hundred and One Dalmatians was so cute! I really liked the way the villain looked. ;)

I hated the book but the movie is my favorite Disney movie.

I like all the classics but most after Disney died were terrible.

I don't like all of the classic Disney fairy tales, but the quality did become more hit and miss after Walt Disney's death.

The Lion King was always my favorite. The rich colors, the fun music, the dramatic ending, the animals . . . I watched that movie again and again and again. :D The sequel wasn't as good however, Simba was out of character and Kiara was so cliche :P

I also love Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas. The songs are wonderful, and so is the animation.

I watch those movies a lot now, trying to take tips from the animators on drawing humans. It's very fun. :D

I like the entire Lion King Trilogy (1.5 was a riot) but I especially like the first one for it's Christian symbolism.

Hated the little Mermaid but I believe we've been over how badly they ruined that book.

I haven't actually seen most of the ones with princesses... Beauty and the Beast was okay but in this day and age I avoid the "I can make him better" philosophy.

I was never sure what I thought of Peter Pan. The book wasn't too great though, he was basically a spoiled brat and stayed that way.

I liked the The Lion King, but after the first sequel I stayed away from the second sequel. Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid were both pretty good.

I'm not sure what I think of Peter Pan, either. It's kind of a weird movie. I've never read the book.

The second sequel was basically a parody of the first movie so I understood that it was purely for amusement and making fun of itself which made it enjoyable.

Yep, self-parodies are the best.

As much as I like movies with animals as main characters I was never a fan of Bambi or Fox and the Hound. I was less of a fan of Bambi... It was really because of the way the hunters are portrayed. I mean sure, the hunter is the enemy of the wild animal trying to survive, but they always make them senseless poachers who shoot at anything that moves. Plus the bear in the Fox and Hound. Totally uncharacteristic of a black bear.

LOL you just listed all the ones I hate the most!

The good ones are:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Pinocchio
Dumbo
Bambi
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
Cinderella
Alice in Wonderland
Peter Pan
Sleeping Beauty
One Hundred and One Dalmatians

These 2 are the only ones I liked after Disney's death.
Robin Hood
The Jungle Book.

There are only 2 now that I'm grown that I still will watch all the way through.
Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland.

I never liked the Disney Princess movies. Maybe part of that had to do with my anti princess stance growing up. I grew up loving the Disney movies in this order:

Lion King. I don't care what anyone says, I still love this movie. It was my all time, hands down, number one favorite. Never thought twice.

101 Dalmations. Big fan! I fell in love with this movie the first time I watched it. Nothing compared to this movie, except Lion King.

Lady and the Tramp

Oliver and Company Loved Dodger.

Fox and the Hound

The Disney animated films weren't really any more erratic after Walt Disney's death, for some of the ones made while he was alive, like Dumbo, weren't that good. It wasn't until the mid 1990s that they really went downhill.

I like most of the Disney animated movies about animals, including those, though I saw Oliver and Company so long ago that I can't remember if I liked it or not.

Oliver and Company is a fun movie. I love the catchy songs.

First time in New York City, I was humming Dodger's tune. :D

Is. In. Love.
Lion King is still my favorite movie of all time. It's so funny and sweet and amazing, and leaves me with a really strange feeling. It's a "kid's movie," but this thing is dark. And I like how the voice of one of the worst dads in the world (character wise) comes out of one of the best. It makes me so happy. I liked Beauty and the Beast, too. Little Mermaid I'll pick up if I'm in a certain kind of mood, where I want pure fluffy romance. But actually, not pure fluff. There were dark bits too. I remember as a kid those weird plant things in Ursula's cave terrified me. I love kid's movies that can weave in dark bits while still keeping the magic and whimsy of a fairy tale, and I think Disney is great at that.

James Earl Jones does the voice both of Darth Vader (horrible dad) and Mufasa (awesome dad). It just makes me happy. Well, anything this guy says makes me happy. He could be saying "sandwich" and I'd be squeeing.

Mufasa was one of my favorite characters. Now my favorite's Nala, but for the longest time, Mufasa was the best lion ever. :D

I think Scar is an awesome villain. He's cowardly and weak, but devious and scheming, and he's most dangerous when he's desperate. My mom and I love his song, "Be Prepared". He's a fun character.

I've been finding parallels between Lion King and the book I'm writing (so much for originality :P ).

Anyway, other favorite Disney movies . . . Mulan is fun, kind of feministic but I love it (gotta love Mushu), Lady and the Tramp is cute. Like I said before, I love Pocahontas (regardless of its historical inaccuracy).

I think I listed everything. I pretty much grew up on Disney movies. ^^

I'm sorry, I know exactly what you're talking about but after seeing Hoodwinked I cannot take that song seriously.

I thought Mulan was good, and it kind of had a right to be a little feminist. China wasn't a female friendly nation in those days.

I did not like The Princess and the Frog. A friend told us it was great, so we watched it. I was very unimpressed and unhappy.

What didn't you like, the story or the voodoo elements? Or both? Or something else?

Both. However, the heavy, constant Voodoo was a big turn off. Disney went from fairy tale magic to overtly Satanic content, including breaking a mannequin’s legs and sticking it with needles.

Oh I love Mulan. I can't believe I forgot it. There's such a journey, she starts out scared, determined, but scared with no clue what to do, and ends up winning by brains, bravery, and strength. And the journey is so realistic, and I love how it took both brains and physical strength to make it to the top of that pole. And so much sneakery and tricksiness throughout to win. I love it.

And I do like Pocahontas; it's just so lovely to look at and to listen to, and shows such an important message. I honestly couldn't care less about how inaccurate it is, and personally it led me to wanting to learn about the real Pocahontas, which has been fun. I'm still not really annoyed by it, even now knowing about the real her.

The Emperor's New Groove was great. It was one of the few Disney movies my dad actually liked (besides Lion King) because, being on of the more recent films made on these lists, the family was still whole.

Both. However, the heavy, constant Voodoo was a big turn off. Disney went from fairy tale magic to overtly Satanic content, including breaking a mannequin’s legs and sticking it with needles.

I did not like the voodoo part. The other parts with cute. In a queer way. The voodoo was very inappropriate for younger children.

I didn't hate Princess and the Frog, but it's certainly not my favorite. I didn't really mind the voodoo stuff or get squicked out by it, but it did totally take away from the sweetness and magic of a fairy tale. This had a completely different feel from anything Disney I've seen before, and I didn't really like it. I was excited when I saw Disney was making a new princess movie, but was pretty dissapointed. I thought it was a cool idea, pretty modern-day, a simple girl, a resturant as the goal, but I just thought the storytelling wasn't the best, and was too heavy with "Gotta make this new! Fresh! Exciting! Appeal to the boys!" There was just too much. And I do think the voodoo stuff was a huge part of that. I think their thinking was that they couldn't use anything they used before, and just complexed it up in trying to stay away from Bad Mean Witch who wanted to ruin everything. But overall, I think they should've just stayed with something like that.
And as I've said, I like more dark fairy tales, but this just had none of the stuff I love about Disney. I did walk out unhappy. It was heavy. I've seen it again at a friend's and liked it better the second time, but I had to make myself like it. And I wasn't swept away into the world, the way I am with many of my favorite Disney movies.

Oooh... My little siblings watched that movie, and it was the only movie Mom didn't look up. They never finished it. Ugh. I haven't seen it, and I don't plan on it.

I haven't seen Tangled yet, if that counts... *wants. to. see.*

Some of my favorites:
Piglet's Big Movie: I liked lots of Winnie-the-Pooh movies, actually.
The Lion King: I still love this movie. Yep. :D
The Little Mermaid: I sort of like this one. Prince Eric looks like one of my characters, sort of.
Aladdin: I haven't seen this one yet, for lack of opportunity, but I want to.

That's all I can think of right now...

Now when Daddy teases that his 20 year old is still in love with the Lion King I can tell him I'm not alone. ;)

Only the best kind of people stay in love with the Lion King forever. *hugs all LK enthusiasts*
I totally concur with all the people saying LK has some awesome Christian imagery. My dad sometimes preaches when our pastor's gone, and he's used so many LK examples.

Aladdin's good, I guess. It's always seemed a bit generic to me, but the songs are fun and the genie and the parrot are awesome. And I like the villan. Not crazy about the heroine. She doesn't really do much. Aladdin (the character) is pretty cool. It's cool to have a Love Interest Guy who's not just a random, pretty boring prince. Like Prince Eric. I absolutely love Little Mermaid (because I like Ariel and Sebastian and Flounder), but I just tend to laugh at this guy.
What did you guys think of Little Mermaid 2? I didn't particularly care for Melody or her animal buddies, but I really loved adult Ariel. That scene where she's inside the gate and puts her feet in the water is one of the best things I've ever seen.

Same here. I know my Mom didn't like the whole "Circle of Life" thing, but I can't really think of another reason, unless you just don't.

Alright, I've heard this objection before. Here's my thoughts. Either it's a New-Age-y, energy becomes energy becomes matter becomes energy gets reincarnated blah blah blah, or it's simply.... the nitrogen cycle. I know in elementary school, by teachers would show that part where Simba and Mufasa are talking about them getting energy from the antelope and then the antelope dying and giving energy to the grass and then the antelope eating the grass to illustrate that. Because that basically is the nitrogen cycle, if very simplified. And then "Circle of Life" I've always seen as really beautiful, because all God's creation is so connected and depend on each other so very much. If a tiny microorganism died, most of the life on the planet would be gone, because guess what, this little dude and his buddies produce 75% of our oxygen. But we totally spoil everything; we are so convinced of our own superiority that we've forgotten how important nature and our animal buddies are. I think it was just meant to teach "Hey guys, look how much these great cool lions depend on the other creatures. Just like us! Even the cool lions want to help the planet. Let's do it, guys!"

I can see that. I think it was the way it was presented... *shrug* I still love the movie.

Hakuna Matata is actually a phrase in Swahili (the language of Tanzania, Africa), and it really means "no worries". :D *hums the song*

I didn't really care for the Little Mermaid 2 either, Cel, but I do agree they did a good job of maintaining Ariel's character. She seemed like a grown up version of herself, instead of a new refurbished character.

Ok sorry, I was gone for a while I've had a raging fever and am just now well enough to get on here.

Apart from the new age-y thingy I would say TLK was boring, had bad songs, poor art, and a mediocre story. And I can't see how anyone likes it...but a lot do

I would disagree, but it is your right to not like my all time favorite childhood Disney movie.

I honestly can't see what's not to like in The Lion King (excluding the "Kings of the Past" stuff), but to each his/her own. ;)

I love 101 Dalmatians. Another of my favorites. :D
