They aren't really in any order.

I think there's a list of the books in chronological order, but I haven't found it. Yet.

I definitely agree with everyone above, Redwall should be read first. Then Mattimeo, then whatever you feel like reading. ;)

I believe there is a list in chronological order on the Redwall website.

There is a chronological order but I don't think it's important. I read Redwall first and then let loose. My library has a lot.

Taggerung is awesome!! Taggerung was the best! Of what I've read so far, which isn't many.

Redwall
Mattimeo
Luke the Warrior
High Rhulain
Taggerung
Um... (No, not a book title, I know there's one or two more but I can't remember what.)

I used to get them out two at a time from the library until all the plots started to sound the same, so I quit. :roll: I should get out another one soon... Taggerung was awesome!

Here's the order they were published in...which, apparently, is the best order.

* Redwall
* Mossflower
* Mattimeo
* Mariel of Redwall
* Salamandastron
* Martin the Warrior
* The Bellmaker
* Outcast of Redwall
* The Great Redwall Feast
* Pearls of Lutra
* The Long Patrol
* Marlfox
* Legend of Luke
* A Redwall Winter's Tale
* Lord Brocktree
* Taggerung
* Triss
* Loamhedge
* Rakkety Tam
* High Rhulain

Here's the chronological order:

* Lord Brocktree
* Legend of Luke - part 2
* Martin the Warrior
* Mossflower
* Legend of Luke - parts 1 and 3
* Outcast of Redwall
* Mariel of Redwall
* Martin the Warrior - framing sequences only
* The Bellmaker
* Salamandastron
* A Redwall Warrior's Tale (short story included with the Build Your Own Redwall Abbey kit)
* Redwall
* The Great Redwall Feast
* A Redwall Winter's Tale
* Mattimeo
* Pearls of Lutra
* The Long Patrol
* Marlfox
* Taggerung
* Triss
* Loamhedge
* Rakkety Tam
* High Rhulain

Anyways, I've read all or most of them but completely out of order. I agree with some people on the internet that if you read them chronologically you get some fun surprises spoiled. But then, even if I remembered all those I read I wouldn't know the order. This is also missing the newer ones (which aren't as good IMHO (I've read one))

When I was 12-14 I read all the redwall books I could find. Then when they had run out I forgot about it for a few years until recently when I read the rest up to this point. I wished I hadn't because there not as good as they were when I was younger.
there really for younger kids and great books but I think I'm a tad old for them now.
(And the whole every book has plot structure was kind of annoying but it was a good plot and he has good characters and has a good writing style.)

Yes, the normal vermin are one dimensional, the warlords are a bit more deeper. But they're bad guys, evil, that's all there is too it.

I do like some of the warlords better than others. I really liked the white bear or something from one of the books...I can't remember his name but he was well done. :D

I have often seen his books in the library and I have been tempted to pick up Redwall and read it but never have. Maybe I should give it a try :)

May I put in my two cents? :) I read the first book, Redwall, first. A neighbor lent it to me, and I liked it a lot (although I didn't really like how the animals are always praying to Nature or something. It's been a while since I read it, but I think that's what they pray to). So I bought several more in the series (none of them in order), and read them, and liked them. But, after reading them again, I realized something: they are all, without exception, exactly the same. Here's the plot of every single book: 1, An evil, completely and absolutely heartless villain wants to take over Redwall or some other animal place. 2. There is a hero. 3. This hero has several friends. They are usually more likeable than the hero. 4. The most likeable of these friends always dies. ALWAYS. 5. The other animals try to kill the main villain, but ALWAYS fail. 6. This evil, heartless villain has creatures under him who are forced to serve him, and you can't figure out whether to hate them or feel sorry for them. 7. There's always some riddle that they have to figure out to get something, or do something. 8. The hero always kills the villain in a final confrontation.
It got very boring after a while. Some things I did like about them: the way that different animals talked differently, especially I liked the mole talk and rabbit talk. I liked the descriptions of food. It always makes my mouth water :D And some other stuff that I can't remember right now. But, all in all, I don't think the Redwall series is worth reading twice. All the stories (whether Mr. Jacques realizes it or not) are just rehashed and rehashed. And he's written a huge number of these stories.

My sis LOVES the Redwall series, and has listened to every one there is on audiobook in our library. I've only heard a couple of them. Different from reading, different from getting the whole story, different from looking at the series at a whole, but the one thing that really impressed me was the quality of writing. The bad guys were a bit too completely evil for me (but that's just me), but the guy who wrote them had a solid grasp of writing and language.

22 books. . . my sis would faint. But anyway, I see how they could possibly be repetitive. I didn't find the ones I listened to so, but I'm not saying you're wrong. Honestly, I don't really care what the series as a whole is like. Individually, the books are fantastic. The world is well thought out, many of the characters likable, and plots engaging. I wouldn't sit down and read three in a week. Everything might start to merge into a muddle. But I can enjoy each book separately.

I agree. I almost wouldn't consider the books a series, just because they're so different. But anyways, I agree--each book alone is very good.

I think younger kids like them because they have the same story, but they're different every time. But they are comfortable because they know what they're getting into.

(when I was 12 I read every one that was published up till that date, whatever year that was... But now years later I picked one up and couldn't read through the first chapter.)

Fellow fans, I have bad news for you. Brian Jacques passed away a few days ago at the age of 71 from a heart attack.

What?! :( That's so sad. Redwall is probably what got me in to reading fantasy and writing it, way back when. Was he a Christian?

I always though I should read the books, they seemed pretty cool.

Jacques was an interesting character. Read his bio. I'm not sure if he was a Christian though...

I love Redwall, I'll just say, as I've not been around here before in order to say so. My absolute favorite is Taggerung. I have read that book about four times, which is saying something considering all the books I'm trying to read as more and more keep coming out. Jacques, whoever he may or may not have been as a man, was--in the very least--a wondrously talented author and storyteller

Eulalia! I enjoy Redwall because of the excellent writing and the cool settings. I can't however find out whether Brian Jaques was Catholic. The whole set up of Redwall Abby seems to give that impression though.

I too am a huge Redwall fan. My personal favorites are Mossflower and Martin the Warrior, as Martin and Gonff are one of my favorite literary duos. I grew up reading the books and they greatly influenced my writing. I write a series titled Magefable that features mice and other forest animals as main characters.
