I put a hold on Tangled at the library near my house. I'm going to watch it with my friend. :D

Ok, so I've seen "Tangled" now, and...

...I loved it. :D

Rapunzel was so cute, and feminine, I didn't see any of the feminism vibes in her that I'd heard about in some reviews. Flynn was hilarious; me being me, gotta love a character with a sense of sarcasm and humour! :D

The magic wasn't so bad, however the thing that did give me a twinge of uncertainty was the whole sun thing; how prominent a place it was given throughout the movie. Harmless magic is one thing, yet using the sun (which is still an icon of heathen worship) was something that didn't sit quite well with me. :?

Other than that, I enjoyed it. :D

It's interesting that you should say that, Bush. Coming from Latin America I had the some discomfort, but I hadn't heard anyone else say so.

I suppose it would be better if it was a magical cow which 'fertilized' the flower, eh? Even though the cow is still held sacred in Hinduism...

@Eru: You noticed it too? I thought I was the only one who might have had an issue with it...

@Luke:  My issue wasn't rooted in the fact the flower came from a drop of sunlight. That was harmless enough. It was the kingdom's apparent reverence of the sun by spreading the image all over the place that concerned me. Plus, it wasn't your innocent "sun with a smiley face" kind of emblem either.

I'm probably playing the whole thing up more than it was intended, but it was something that I noticed when I saw it, and for honesty's sake, I mentioned it.

Yes, I know. I'm just joking around as usual. :P

Well, the sun happened to be a handy shape. We use stars all over the place in America, ourselves...

Good thing I can take joking around. ;) *fans self dramatically*

Well actually, I was going to mention that I probably wouldn't have had an issue at all if they used stars instead of the sun, so it's funny you should say that. :D

On a different note, my brothers loved this movie. :D One even went so far as to tell me to buy it next time I went to town. I think Flynn's humorous quotes did it for them. There were even places that made my Dad laugh! Did anyone nearly roll on the floor laughing at the scene where Rapunzel is trying to put Flynn in the closet?

And also, this quote is so versatile to use:

"I could get used to a view like this. Yep, I'm used to it. Guys I want a castle."

I don't think any of us fell out of our seats (possibly only because we slouch in couches and armchairs and wreck our backs) but it was a close thing. The whole family was laughing so hard at spots that we had to rewind so we could hear what the characters said.

*laughs * Oh we had lots of laughing moments. :D

I think the reason they placed the sun everywhere was not really a worship, but was actually as a remembrance. The flower saved not only their queen, but the long awaited princess, as well. They have murals of the princess in the marketplace, why not have symbols of the sun (which has a flower flare to it) to remember the curing of the queen and her daughter?

I see it similar to my family placing things around the house that remind us of Samuel. We aren't worshiping Samuel, but we are keeping the memory of him fresh in our minds. I am actually very attached to the inanimate Mr. Philmoore Better. I draw comfort from something that has no soul. But it is a reminder of Samuel, something that was part of what made up his life. So I relate it to the same thing. There was no direct sun worship, although I can understand your concern.

I was very pleased with the lack of magic, and how it was handled.

I am almost done with watching Tangled, only about 30 minutes left to watch tonight. I just barely got to the part where the suns all lit up in her room and my dad said it was time to go to bed.

I really love it so far. I was laughing when Rapunzel hit him over the head with the skillet, and then tried to stuff him in the closet. And then I was laughing where they were singing in the Cuddly Duckling restaurant. . . All of the hilarious dreams they had! Interior decorator, florist!

And the part where she saw the lanterns in the sky, when they were in the rowboat on the lake! That was so pretty, and memorable.

Flynn was so funny. I loved his dry humor!

I finally watched it yesterday night! :dieshappy: I really liked it, but I didn't know that there was going to be so much singing. :) I don't really like musical movies normally, but this was okay. Flynn is so funny! :dieshappy: I really enjoyed it. :D

Yeah, my Daddy isn't much for musicals, either. ;) But since the movie had Mandy Moore in it, I expected lots of music. :D

Mother arrived home today and she said she had got something for me as a surprise; that something turned out to be Tangled! :dieshappy: How sweet is that. Can't wait to see it again! I have lots of time this weekend so I'll be soaking in all those beautiful lyrics. :salute: I have to sing soon in a play, so I thought I might chose some Tangled songs. :)

Has anyone seen it? What do you think of it? I've been wanting to see it since I saw the preview, so I was wondering what people thought of it. I thought it looked pretty clean, funny, and a unique twist on a fantasy story. If you have no idea what it is, go here. :)

Questions:
1. Does anyone else besides Evening and myself think Flynn looks like Jason Whittaker?

2. What do you think of the movie? (Aka, elaborate on what you picked in the poll ;))

3. Were there any elements from the story that you thought were good to use in writing our stories? Were there any that you thought were bad?

Question 1: Yes...now that you mention it!

Q 2: I love it, absolutely and wonderfully love it! (And hey to you guys out there who may or may not have seen it? I know two 'cool dudes' who most want to watch war movies and superheroes and they loved Tangled, so there. :D)
I read someone else saying that Rapunzel looked none-too-bright and how they kind of resented that. Having seen the movie, I agree and disagree. While Rapunzel isn't the brightest girl, she certainly is a loveable character and, hey, who can blame her since she's lived (hello) in a TOWER her whole life? That cuts down on the learning experience just a tad. Plus, by the end of the movie, she's matured so much, that it doesn't matter anyway.

Q3: Hm, story elements and plot stuff...There were no major holes that I saw--and, come on, this is a Disney fairy-tale, so a hole or two isn't going to kill anyone.

I loved the twists to the original, and I adored the King, for all that he was in two scenes and never spoke a word. That's amazing animation and character plotting right there.

My girlfriend (um...yeah, we'll leave it at that) and I were swimming in the Washougal River yesterday and I found a sturdy camp skillet. First thing I said was, "Flynn Rider was here!"

Now it is signed, in silver Sharpie, by 'Flynn Rider' and 'Rapunzel.'

@Matt: That is so cool, Matt, on both accounts. ;)

@ Willow: I love the Botkin girls. They are an amazing family, both in person, and as a Christian presence. However, the girls and I have very different views about Repunzel. :) Which is fine. However, having been a flaming feminist once upon a time, I can say that many of the things well meaning non feminists tend to say, in regards to feminism, are what caused me to revel in my feminism. Not that anyone but myself was to blame. See, when you tell a girl that x,y, and z means they are being feminists, when in actuality it is not feminism but feminine strength, you cause that girl to say "Feminine? If I have to be a pansy to be feminine then it's not for me". *shrugs * That was my biggest issue with the girls' viewpoint. Repunzel isn't a feminist. If she is, then the Lord has done no work in me and I am, in fact, still a feminist. Which I know, I am not. :D

Congratulations, Matt! :D

@Willow: *thinks* I saw the movie a month-ish ago and loved it. I had noted a few of the moral problems in the movie; but with the way I view fiction, it had no hold over me (that I can notice, granted) and with the moral quality of any other movie, it was pale in comparison.
Then a friend pointed out all the problems of the movie with a perspective I wouldn't normally think of....

Now I'm inclined to recommend it, but only with caution and only if I'm sure the person I'm recommending it to wouldn't be adversely affected.

The perspective you wouldn't normally think of.

Well, I think that's what my brain wants expounding upon...

Ah. :D

*thinks* ...perhaps I wasn't explaining myself well. My point was that I saw the movie, and though I noticed one or two problems, didn't realize that the wrong point-of-view would color others and influence them in a bad way. My friend was able to point that out from her perspective.

Did that help at all? :P

As in having little kids think, "What if my parents are impostors?" kind of thing? :D

That's what my mom doesn't like about it.

"I've seen it, and I'd recommend it with caution."

Almost voted "I wouldn't recommend it," but I like enough things about it to tip into the "with caution" side. :) I wouldn't recommend it for kids, unless their parents were to talk through it all with them.

Curious: What wouldn't you recommend about it? I realize that maybe having young kids watching it, some things might be a bit frightening for them, or just images you might not want in their head, but I myself have no reason to recommend with caution--unless I was recommending to someone who doesn't normally watch/like fairytales and Disney films, in which case, I probably wouldn't mention it because they wouldn't be interested.

I have rather serious worldview issues with it, at least serious enough that I fear it would be confusing for children and some young people. :)

Other than the use of some items and themes which are considered 'magic', and perhaps encouragement of 'dating'...I thought it was refeshingly clean for a liberal movie, cleaner than a lot of others. I'm honestly curious because I didn't see any problems, but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, or objectively. Can you pinpoint any of the conflicting worldview things you noticed?

Okies, if y'all insist. ;) *doesn't want to get into an argument*

Basically, there were three main problems I noticed:

1. Rebellion. I know some will disagree with me here, since Gothel was not in fact Rapunzel's true mother, and was using her for selfish ends, but I still say the way this situation was handled is potentially confusing for children -- how many kids already see their parents as "unfair" and how many are going to force their parents into a mold of Mother Gothel? Two of my sisters are uncomfortable watching the movie because of this aspect. I think the same situation could have been handled better -- made less to look externally like a typical "teenage rebellion" moment.

2. Unrealistic romance. Running off alone with a thief? Bright idea, Rapunzel. In the real world, innocent young girl and selfish, immoral young man running off alone together will not end well. This I think is even more problematic than the rebellion issues, because it endorses the naive view of romance and guys that a lot of young girls already have.

3. Unrealistic view of evil. In the real world, ruffians and thugs aren't some sort of poor, lovable, misunderstood souls who've just never been allowed to live their dreams who will be instantly transformed by the singing of an innocent, defenseless young girl. There are selfish, immoral and just plain evil people out there, and while reformation is possible, and God can and will protect His own, it's a really bad idea to tell young kids that bad guys "are just misunderstood" and not dangerous. I think this might have been most disturbing of all, to me.

I found it all rather disturbing, and despite my love for a lot of things about the film, I cannot fully endorse it.

Them's my humble thoughts. *curtsies* You asked for it, remember. ;)

But if Gothel was Rapunzel's true Mother, she'd have been well within her rights to run away anyway, in my opinion. :D So I have no problem with that personally. She wasn't being rebellious, I mean in this world if a parent kept a child locked up in a room for 18 years they'd be put in prison.

The thieves aren't shown to be good though, they're actually shown to be bad aren't they? Flynn is the only one who's shown to turn out ok in the end isn't he? It's been a while since I watched it, and I can't think of anyone but Flynn who turns out ok, but I may be wrong.

For the second one, Rapunzel wasn't running off for the idea of romance, she was escaping from Gothel and he was her guide. I know it turns into romance in the end. I can see where you're coming from with that. I'd actually never thought of what you're saying before! :)

I am glad you shared your thoughts, it's always interesting to hear different view points. Everyone has different opinions/family stances concerning these things, so I completely understand where you're coming from, and how you're uncomfortable with some things that others might not be. And it's good for them to see what you think about it, because they get an all round view of different opinions and can work out where they stand with it. So it's great to all share different 'reviews'. :D When we were very young we actually never watched many Disney films because Mother and Dad didn't think they were all that suitable for younger kids.

The one thing about the whole rebellion bit, though, is that Repunzel's age is actually mentioned, and while she leaves while she's 17, I really would consider her to be an adult, and hence disobeying her mother isn't rebellion in the same way at all. I mean, sure, she's not an adult by our standards, but she really is old enough that she should be able to make at least some of her own decisions. I understand if that still doesn't seem like enough, but I'm just pointing out that it's not the same as if she was, say, 12.
