I just saw "Beyond the Mask" last night. An interesting mix of good and bad.

Most of the negatives are probably just personal taste on my part. For example, I don't like pulling historical figures (Benjamin Franklin & George Washington in this case) into fictional tales. They too often end up as caricatures ... which is what happened in this case. Also, I don't like mixing patriotism with Christianity ... as if all the Christians in the colonies realized American Independence was the "right" cause and all the unbelievers were evil Tories. But I bet it helped them sell more tickets, so maybe it was a smart move on their part.

The other negative, though, is that even the characterization of the fictional characters was a little wooden and cliche'. The actors seemed to be switching between costume drama mode and adventure mode.

Still, overall I would recommend the movie. On the plus side it had a decent plot. The sets. music, and special effects were all well done.

Most interesting to me was the world they managed to create. I could see this laying a foundation for a whole genre of Christian adventure films. If you're familiar with steam punk, they managed to turn the clock back and create "colonial punk" if you will. I really liked how they put that all together.

I guess I'm not that detail oriented. I didn't see a lot of those things in the movie, Resha. Although, I do agree about the cameos of famous historical figures. I really liked the movie and can't wait to watch it again when it's out on DVD. :D

As who?!

I got to see this film pre-release at the CWVFF and while I agree with you Resha, I still think that this film is a big step for Christian Filmmakers.

Just a side note, some other good films to look into are Polycarp, Indescribable, and The War Within.

I agree.

You learn something every day. I hadn't heard of this festival. I'll have to put it on the agenda. Since my bucket list includes seeing a baseball game at every MLB stadium, when I'm in Texas for the Astros & Rangers, I'll have to see if I can include this festival.
