Has anyone read any of William Barclay's books/commentaries? He has a fantastic series I started reading this past spring and he basically breaks down then entire New Testament in separate books. I am reading "Matthew." It's fantastic and has helped me understand why Jesus said certain things and how the culture did things and what thing symbolized back then. Truly a fascinating book! :D

I haven't, Calen; but funny enough I was looking at these the other day somewhere on the internet, and I was sure there was a topic on Holy Worlds for him. :)

Whew, way to resurrect this thread. Goodness, it seems so long ago since I posted it. I never complete reading "Matthew", so I will be picking that up again tonight. I've been starving for some good one-on-one time with God. ^^

So is this a theology book then? Or written as a fictional account?

@Willow: It's along the lines of a theology book. But it's more of a commentary on the books of the New Testament. For instance, Mr. Barclay will start with the first few verses of , Matthew for instance, and explain the significance of certain verses or words. He often refers back to the Greek and/or Hebrew word and meaning. For example, "love" has four separate words in the Greek language.

1.) Agape - unconditional love
2.) Eros - passionate love/sensual desire and longing
3.) Philia - friendship love
4.) Storge - affectionate love, like a parent to their child

He brings back these words in their context and as you're reading, suddenly the verse takes on another feeling entirely. It's quite fascinating for sure. ^^

I have his book on Romans, that I got at a yard sale for about 25 cents. Not sure about him, exactly, but I think he might be somewhat liberal when it comes to the supernatural (denial of miracles, etc.). But overall, from the difference commentaries I've read by very reliable people he seems to be reasonably orthodox. I'd have to read some of his stuff to be sure though.

I haven't read anything of his recently. I've been a little too overwhelmed, so I'm still working through Matthew off and on. From what I've read I guess I can't compare that assessment to what I've covered so far. Maybe at a later point I'll be able to. : )
