Welcome, welcome to week twelve! If this is your first time joining us, please read the original announcement.

This week is a very special week. I have been honoured to be asked to help out with the Read-a-Thon activity for the book of the week this week, which happens to be HW's very own The Sword and Pen! In celebration, we have a number of weekly goals for you to choose from (or do a number of them for five points each). But that's not all! Each option has a specific number of Read-a-Thon points connected with it, and by posting in the thread in the Read-a-Thon room saying that you've done that option, that number of points will be added to your score! Great deal, huh?

What's that?

Oh, you want to know the options before you decide if it's a good deal. Very well.

1. Write a sestina (40 Read-a-Thon points)
2. Write a poem with the theme of discovery set in a far away place (25 Read-a-Thon points, 30 if the far away place is a fantasy land)
3. Write a ballad with a minimum of six stanzas (20 Read-a-Thon points)
4. Write a haiku including the word "silence" (10 Read-a-Thon points)
5. Write a Hemingway (10 Read-a-Thon points)

And, as always, you are more than welcome to make personal goals. No Read-a-Thon points for those, though, sorry. ;)

As always...

The Rules wrote:
1. All challenges must be declared completed by midnight Saturday in your timezone (please specify your timezone when you sign up).
2. Personal challenges must be declared by midnight Monday in your timezone.
3. Personal challenges cannot be repeated.
4. The organizer reserves the right to veto any challenges that seem too simple. (i.e. writing a sentence)

Also, I would like to remind everyone that any weekly challenge pieces that are posted on the forum will be eligible to be featured in our newsletter once it gets off its feet. Please post a link in this thread if you would like it to be considered.

If you could write your sign-up post in a similar format to the following, it would be appreciated:
Goal: weekly challenge (or whatever you decide to do)
Timezone: PDT

On your mark! Get set! Go!!! *fires pistol excitedly*

@Katharina: A Hemmingway is a story in six words. You could try that!

@Lycanis: A six word story.

A story in 6 words  ?!? I had trouble with a story in only 100 words! Oh well, I guess I can see what I can do.

I will add Weekly goal 5. *gulps in fear* ;)

Here're my Hemingways!

Can I try the haiku as well, or would I have to have declared that on Monday?

You can do the haiku for Read-a-Thon points, but it needed to be declared by Monday for weekly challenge points.

You do!

*is getting a sneaking suspicion that she should have given less weekly challenge points for the Hemmingways* ;)

 Well, I will be nice and not just start pumping out hemingways for the points, but try to write ones that are actually good. ;)

I hope it's ok to ask this here...but what constitutes a "good" Hemingway?

Well, "good-ish" in my eyes, and just for my hemingways. Meaning I'll try to have all the elements of a story, character, conflict, and plot, not just random sentences. Try being the key word.

Oh...okay... :?

How would you rank this one:

"Hey look, I'm floating!...Oh no..." Would that be a "random sentence"?

Well, it's not my job to decide if a hemingway is good or not. What I said was merely something for myself, just for my hemingways, since I'm a very harsh critic of my own writing. It sounds selfish now that I think about it. Sorry for any undue confusion!

No no! I understand that...I just value your opinion, even if mine will differ somehow. *isn't sure that that's the case* I'm just going to not count any that I don't consider to be good myself.

Okay. You can always ask me about a hemingway in chat.

I completed my personal goal, and this is the last batch of Hemingways.

Everyone please remember to post your poetry in the read-a-thon weekly activity thread to get your bonus points! Read-a-thon counters will not count work reported here; only work reported in the official thread.
