| This project died in a combinations of my laziness and my hiatus. I hope to revive it, someday, but right now. . . *clears throat* I have heard many people talk about listening to music while they write. I've tried it, and enjoy it. However, I am aware of the multitasking myth, and have always wondered whether listening to music while writing is counter-productive. I propose a study on this subject. I would like as many volunteers as possible to pledge to write at the same time of the day each day for two weeks, keeping track of the work that was made each day. One week volunteers will listen to music while they write; the other week they will have silence. At the end of the second week, volunteers will submit their wordcount for each day and a completed questionnaire I will supply concerning quality of work. If you are interested, please respond and answer these questions: What style(s) of music will you listen to? Do you already write regularly write each day? Have you (a) never attempted writing while listening to music, (b) written while listening to music multiple times, or (c) created a habit of listening to music while writing? Any requirements or questions that I ask that appear unnecessary are actually my attempt at a controlled experiment. The experiment's beginning day will be April 24 and ending day, May 7. I will PM you reminding you of the start date, assigning whether you will listen to music the first or the second week, and sending you the questionnaire, not necessarily at the same time. When I have my results I will post on this thread. | |

| I would be interested in attempting this, if the length of time we were required to write daily wasn't long. I already write daily, but when and for how long I write is very variable. To ensure that I'm working at the same time each day, I wouldn't be able to set off a long block of time. What style(s) of music will you listen to? -movie soundtrack, classical, world, new age, hymns. Mostly instrumental, in all cases. Do you already write regularly write each day? Yes. Have you (a) never attempted writing while listening to music, (b) written while listening to music multiple times, or (c) created a habit of listening to music while writing? C | |

I was thinking 30 minutes would be the longest I could get everyone to sit down for each day, but if anyone can do longer, that's great, just make sure you record how long you spent. Thank you.

That I could handle, barring a catastrophe that arises in the next week.

| C'mon, anyone from over here? It can't be that hard! We're all *supposed* to write every day anyway, so this could help you form a good habit! Besides, listening to music is fun, so what have you got to lose? Plus. . . *pulls out guaranteed-to-bribe-snickerdoodles* | |

| I'll volunteer after the 30th. I have no guarantee I can write every day no matter how much I'm supposed to during dress rehearsals. But it does sound like fun. | |

| Peoples! Will you answer the questions, please, Abby? Well, I was planning on starting it on the 24th, if you look at the dates in my first post. I think we can go ahead and start then (I'll PM everyone this evening). However. . . we can have a group that starts a week later, on the 31st (for those who can't do anything until after the 30th ). It's not like the starting/stopping dates will mess with the experiment. | |

| Er, I'm considering.... I'm just bad at writing every day. And I don't have computer access on Sundays (most of the time anyhow). Still eligible? | |

| To all who are interested: Our first group has already started the experiment. However, as a ML has expressed her ability to participate if she starts a week late, we're gathering a second group to perform the experiment staggered to the first group. That was fancy explaining meaning if you say you're interested, you'll be starting May 1 instead of yesterday. | |
