Hi, I'm brand new to the forum, and feel free to move me if this is the wrong category for this topic.
My problem: I can't think of a name for my country. I know quite a bit about it, but no good name has come to me yet. Maybe all your brilliant minds can help me out.
My country is, I think, roughly 500 miles across. It is divided down the middle with a mountain range, through which a good highway road passes. On the east side of the mountains are vast, hot prairies, plains, wheat fields. Not desert, just hot with few trees. A few large rivers run to the east edge, which borders on the clear, sparkling sea. The people there have skin that is light but prone to tanning, straight brown hair, and green or hazel eyes. They mostly dwell on large farms or in cities.
On the west side of the mountains is forest. Vast, seemingly endless, and from above you could see many silver streams and rivers criss-crossing through the dark green. The climate here is damper. The people there have pale skin that is prone to sunburn, with blond hair that is straight or slightly wavy, and blue, or occasionally light green, eyes. They live mostly in small isolated villages.
The country is bordered on the west, north and south by some other unnamed, undeveloped countries, but I'll think about them later. The neighboring country that matters most in my story is across the sea. It is called Agrotha. I think its climate is more pleasant, kind of tropical, like the southern USA. The people there have darker golden skin, eyes of almost black, and thick, black, tightly curled hair. They are known in my country as "Agrothians".
But I can't think of a name for this main country! I've been calling it "Here". Help? Any suggestions?

I had the same problem a few days ago when I was trying to name my world  naming is never easy for me...

But as for naming your country, I like to look up names in other languages (specifically Hebrew and Latin) and tweak them a little...or not, it really depends how much I like the name. Anyways, I don't think I have any extremely awesome names to offer you, but sometimes it's fun to discover your own name. :D You can try thinking of what goes in your world, what it represents, or even the whole storyline of your book. Choose a few words that may describe these things. Look them up in different languages. Then just have fun playing with the words until one strikes as "Hey! I like that one!".

Sorry if that was pointless. Just thought I'd say my two cents. Oh, yah, and welcome new member! *hands you taco and walks out of thread*

Hi! Welcome. It would be lovely if you'd post in Introductions and introduce yourself! :) http://www.holyworlds.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=22&start=0
It's always great to have new people join.

On topic: I always find Beth's idea best. I find a word that I like or that sounds right in a different language and I meddle with it. Like Timor, Alunsa, Tacmo, Calmin etc. All those are jumbled up Latin words; they aren't very good but just ideas of what you can do.

Thank you, Bethany, I should have thought of that. That's a good suggestion.
And Elanor, I really should introduce myself, thank you for reminding me.
I'll be sure to let you know if I think of a name!

I think I have it! I used Google Translate to translate "France" into other languages, and I came up with Murancis. I like the name, and I think it will grow on me. I have a space filler now, at least!

That is good! :D

Not being one to make up names very easily, I usually play with foreign languages like Bethany does. Often I'll look up a relevant word in another language and just use it straight. If you use a bunch of words from the same language across your realm, you can create a consistent "feel."
