With no info, I'd go for "The Jester". But I don't know anything either.
What does the tavern look like? Where is it? What kind of people frequent it? Who owns it? What are its specialty drinks? What parts of the plot happen there?

I've been having a hard time deciding on a name for a tavern in my story. Didn't know where else to put this, since I couldn't exactly find the right forum that would allow polls, sorry if it's in the wrong place! Anyway, vote for whichever one you like best. If you need more info about the tavern to make the name fit, go ahead and ask. I'm also open to suggestions. |

Where is this tavern? Is it in a noble place, or a lower city area, or the slums? The position of the tavern usually helps decide the name (and I'm just plain interested.) |

A few of my own: Who frequents the place? In one story I've come across, a tavern is named "The Hammer and Bow", and is often visited by members of a secret order named "The Hammer and Bow". (I don't remember which one came first, the tavern or the order.) Also, taverns also borrow names from popular history and myth. Examples include "The Waterloo Inn" and "The Banshee". |

Here's a clip that might tell you more: The rain was still falling. Aaron pulled his hood down over his face, trying to ignore the dull ache in his side. He shouldn't have attempted this journey so soon after breaking his ribs . . . but he really had no choice. The light from the candles in their protected holders spilled out onto the wet streets, providing what little light there was, but his elven eyes did not need it. Anna, however, kept tripping over the uneven stones in the cobbled streets. She was soaked to the skin. Aaron reached down and caught her arm just before she plunged face-first into a puddle. The colt, bay hide black from rain and sweat, trudged along behind. All three were exhausted. Aaron looked up and glimpsed a weathered wooden sign above his head. The fading letters read; ______________________. Loud voices and laughter poured out of the sturdy building, and a spacious stable adjoined it. Although the rain nearly drowned the outdoors, it only made the tavern look friendlier. Aaron tied the colt to an iron ring just inside the stable door and bent down to Anna's level. "Stay right here, Anna. I'll be back soon." Anna's bright eyes spoke of confusion and fear, but she gulped and nodded bravely. Aaron squeezed her shoulder and walked back out into the rain. *** Mistress Amelia bustled around behind the counter, her wide skirts swirling as she worked. Business was brisk tonight. The portly, middle-aged woman expertly filled several mugs from the tap on a barrel, then set them on a tray and whisked them off to a table near the front windows. Four farmers laughed uproariously as she set down the tray, and one of them reached up and pinched her cheek. "Pretty as ever, Amelia!" Amelia blushed. "The ale 'as addled your brain, Lawrence," she protested, secretly pleased. Lawrence took a swig from his mug and smacked his lips appreciatively. "Per'aps," he said, with a mischievous air. The other three laughed harder, and Amelia shook her head and took the tray back to the counter. The door opened, and a tall, slender figure in a navy, travel-worn cloak entered the tavern. The stranger stood with his back pressed against the door for a moment, as if intimidated by all the people and noise, then pushed back his hood and ran his long fingers through his midnight hair. Amelia felt strangely captivated by the man. The slim, lithe build, the finely chiseled features, and the strong but sorrowful dark amber eyes all seemed to draw her in somehow. Then she she got a glimpse of his ears, and caught hold of the edge of the counter to steady herself. 'Not a man,' she realized, 'an elf!' That's about all of the clip that describes the tavern. The rest of it takes care of the plot, which is (in case you were wondering) that Aaron leaves Anna with Amelia in Mandira, then goes on to his duty in Shirdan (a military camp). |

Thanks for the info, it really helped! I voted for the Phoenix's Tavern, although, as a second I'd agree with Mindy on "The Jester". It sounds like a, dare I use the word, respectable tavern in a small town, so I wouldn't think that it would have a flashy name, unless if you wanted it to stand out as something not quite commonplace. It's looking great, and I absoultely love your clip! |

After reading your excerpt, I voted for "Hearth and Helm." It seems to set the same tone as the passage, and it invites thoughts of laughter, happiness, and definitely seems to evoke the "homely" image that I pictured in my mind while reading the passage. |
