I am taking a creative writing class at the local community college this year, and I found one of the story assignments to be a good exercise. Here it is. Write a short story (500 words or so) by only telling what the characters are doing, as if you are an observer of what is going on, and cannot tell what the people are thinking or feeling. You can only show their moods/emotions/thoughts by their actions. I've found that using this kind of peripheral narration in my other stories (although not quite to this extreme) has helped my readers to feel more connected to the story itself. |

Very good idea! I think we all should do this one. It really helps a lot, especially when you don't know what your characters are thinking (or when you are not supposed to). |

*sigh* I think this will have to wait for December first. Nano is driving me insane, and I'm already skeptical about whether I'll make it! But I will definitely try this out when I have time! |
