Do you have one Detective usually in your books, or two - or maybe even a team? In Gravestone Woods I have two guys who are the Detectives, however I have often thought I'd re-write it with both a male and female detective, rather than two guys. I'm not sure if it would work because of the time frame it's written in, women didn't have jobs as such, certainly not alongside men as equals, so I'm not sure it would really work out, although I'd love to add some other dimension in there. Still pondering how I could manage that. Is your Detective one of a kind, unusual, likeable, a nuisance or eccentric. Do you like him/her? I always find it rather amusing that Agatha Christie really disliked her character Hercule Poirot, yet she writes him so well! |

I don't have a detective quite yet, but I plan on writing a book that has a detective in it. It will be the third book in my series and will most likely be the hardest book I write. |

"I have been much blamed for doing that gentleman to death, but I hold that it was not murder, but justifiable homicide in self-defense, since, if I had not killed him, he would certainly have killed me." – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle * grins * One thing that someone mentioned somewhere about detectives is that it is the only case where the majority of official practitioners in fiction (police and police detectives, for instance) are criticized, and the independent or amateur ones are shown as the only people who are really able to do the job well. I have noticed that as a trend myself (though I don't read much mystery). It's rather interesting. Has anyone noticed this too? |

I have noticed that, although I never thought of it like that. I have a couple of detective/cop characters at the moment: Padraic, Richard, Mel, and Victor. Paddy is the charrie of this bunch I know the best-I've been mentioning him around the forums a lot lately... Paddy is the guns blazing, gut feeling type who seldom looks before he leaps, but he's got enough agility and foundation under him to make most of the landings. Rich is his partner and opposite. Rich gets warrants and fills put paperwork and knows the rules. He and Paddy keep each other balanced and are fast friends. Mel is Paddy's old partner, and Vic used to work cases with that trio. I'm still plotting their stories. XD |
