I thought I would share these great sites with all of you interested in the medieval period. This website has some of the best info I've ever found. Pictures, Ancient texts, the works. Also it has a course on learning Old English (As in Anglo Saxon, not Shakespeare.) It's great and I'm starting to learn it. The Orb can take some getting used to, but it's one of my favorite tools! Also, almost any books you can find by Joseph and/or Frances Gies are very handy resources! And should you not be able to find them in your local library, I have several of their books that I can peruse if needed

I just thought I'd post some resources I've gathered over time. I'm always looking for something that covers the 12th century or, even better, 12th century England, but I think all of these do cover a broader geographical area and time period. Mostly Medieval: --This has loads of stuff. The "Merkat Cross" has links to books, nonfiction and fiction, (and music CDs!) on Amazon. The "Exploring the Middle Ages" has some cool stuff too--but I wouldn't trust the costumes they link. (There's a reason it says "Medieval THEMED.") http://www.mostly-medieval.com/ Patterns of Time: --This is technically a store of sorts, but it has period-accurate costumes, and pictures of them, so it might not be bad as a resource for the looks of things. (And yes, I've bought one of these...yet to get it done.) http://www.patternsoftime.com/ Gode Cookery: --This one is mostly just cool. I want to do some of these recipes sometime. It's a bit of ancient, clunky site but it has real medieval/renaissance recipes translated into modern recipes. http://www.godecookery.com/ Great Courses: --Really, I suggest this company for ANYTHING. All of the courses we've bought have been superb. I've personally listened to Daileader's High Middle Ages and it was very good--I'm currently doing Dorsey Armstrong's "Medieval World" and I quite like it as well. Unfortunately, this is *not* free. They do have 70% off sales almost constantly, however. http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/courses.aspx?s=848&ps=918 I also have a pile of books, but mainly I suggest Names Through the Ages by Teresa Norman (for naming characters in *most* time periods and in selected geographical places) and England Under the Norman and Angevin Kings (1075-1225) by Robert Bartlett, for the serious Anglo-Norman enthusiast like me (the book is huge). |

The medieval ones or in general? The medieval ones I linked to, so you can read course descriptions there. But in general, they have history, mathematics, philosophy, religion, literature, economics, what they call "better living" (I haven't seen any of those), fine arts and music...a bunch of stuff. A couple hundred courses, maybe three hundred. I've mostly seen the history and music courses, but we have an economics course that's good and two good Shakespeare courses (judging by what my sister thinks of them). The way they pick their courses is by a process to find the best teachers in America, basically, and have them record lectures so anybody can listen to them. This process of looking for good teachers is what makes them all (that I've seen) so fascinating. Our bookshelf of Great Courses is a prized possession. I even bought the two medieval history ones myself. |

I recommend anything by Joseph and/or Frances Gies. They're a husband-wife team of historians who really do a good job of presenting their information on a popular level that's easy to understand. Some specific ones that I have are: Daily Life in a Medieval Village, Daily Life in a Medieval Town, Daily Life in a Medieval Castle, Women in the Middle Ages, and Marriage and Family in the Middle Ages. I haven't read all of these (in fact, the only one I've even gotten part-way through is Daily Life in Middle Ages, I haven't touched the others yet. I plan on remedying that in the hopefully near future, and I'll let you know more about them once I do. |

Since we are on the topic of Medieval History, I was wondering if anyone has any good sites for Irish Medieval History (preferably pertaining to the 1200's-1400's AD)? I am currently writing a story that is partly set in Ireland, and so far my research has only scratched the surface (clothing mostly). Any help someone could give would be most appreciated! -Lass |
