World War Two was the start of modern aviation, and modern air combat. The Luftwaffe played a key role in the Blitzkrieg, and naval battles were often decided by air power, as opposed to WW1 and earlier where they were decided by ships blazing away at each other. (The airplane made the the battleship obsolete, which is why we don't them anymore. Well, the missile did too.) Some of the most iconic planes in aviation history were used here. The P-51 Mustang. The F4U Corsair. The Spitfire.

So, anyone know some really good information on WW2 aviation, planes, and design? Experimental designs?

This is research for an alternate history, science-fiction, dieselpunk story I'm working on, with the first divergent point being the discovery of another element to speed up plane development.

I happen to be a history buff and I am very interested in the World Wars. I have done some research of my own and this was one of the sites I used for the aircraft. I hope it helps. :D

I'm a WWII Marine reenactor, the marines didn't deal much with aircraft, but if you have any other WWII Q's, I might be able to answer them :)
