Vulnerable

I wonder if I’d like to be
The upper, topmost twig.
Where every breeze that drifts my way
Stirs my fragile roots and makes me wonder if I will break and fall.
Every branch below me
Does not quaver like I do
For they are strong and sturdy
Breezes must be powerful to sway their strong arms.

I wonder if I’d like to be the upper, topmost twig.
For the first breath of winter would chill my bones the first
I would be the first feel those shivers running up and down my spine
Even while the strong branches below me didn’t feel it.
The first needle of sleet would bite me first.
The first marble of hail would crush my vulnerable ribs before
Any of those powerful pillars below me.

I wonder if I”d like to be the upper, topmost twig.
For the Spring would kiss my upraised face before any of the others
I would be the one to welcome her advent.
Before any of those branches below me.
The first splash of summer rain would cool my skin
The first snippet of lace would balance on my fingers
Before the branches below me even knew it was snowing.

So there I would be.
Dashed by the wind and crushed by the hail.
Staggering back to my feet again and again because I know that
Spring is coming
I will be the one to welcome her.
I will be one to fondle the snowflake
I will be the one to see it first.

Please tell me what you think!

That was brilliant! I loved it, Cadenza. Beautiful. :)

I second Elanor, Cadenza: that was brilliant. Very very well-written. I especially loved how it morphed from negative to positive :D

Thanks! My sister wasn't sure what to think about it always changing from warm to cold, so I'm glad you like it! :D
