| When we build for space - whether designing ships or stations, the titan-level of construction known simply as astro construction has always fascinated me. As a writer, I would like to design my own planet and then build it. I would like to consider the enormous cost in manpower, energy, technology, biology, chemistry, etc. We are talking Death Star times 10! A full-sized planetoid ship. But a ship in only the sense that we can maneuver it out of harm's way if ever needs be - possibly by remote. The hulk of the design would be a biosphere - an ark of life: animals, rain, oceans, lava flows, etc. Earth Two. Does a man-made planet mess with theology too much? Does it challenge our Creator? As I write about its design, should I do it with the understanding that my designs will be flawed? Maybe that's a whole other discussion. Astro-construction and terraforming seem like great topics for Christian Sci-fi adventures. | |

| I don't think it would mess with theology or challenge God, since it's not really a planet. It's a construct designed to simulate a planet. We already have some of those in a smaller scale, Biosphere 2 being a prime example, but this would be far more complicated. I don't think lava flows would work too well though, since it would probably begin eating through the substance it was built of. Also, the ecological work that would have to go into this to make it functional is mind-boggling. I'm not even sure we'd know where to start. But yeah, the designs will definitely be flawed, since there's no possible way we could create a self-sustaining biosphere on that scale without needing to intervene. | |
