Of all organizations throughout human history, few grew into legend as rapidly and influentially as the Space Rangers of the Terran Command. Their exploits were the tale of high adventure tales in their truth, and high drama when fictionalized.

The Space Rangers were established in 2995 at the First Astraeus Conclave, and proposed by Asden representative Alynia. Her homeship has been to lost to time, unfortunately, as the Asden suffered greater in the period of chaos. It was approved in the vote, but by a slim majority. The other powers were hesitant to enact such a bill, but Terra went ahead with full gusto, creating the Terran Command with jurisdiction in all Terran-controlled systems, and nominal authority in all of Confederacy territory, as per the treaty. The rest of the galaxy pulled back to see what would happen in this experiment.

Seeing the pressure, the Terran government drew upon millennium of tradition and their greatest experts, shaping the tradition all future commands of the Rangers would follow. They pulled inspiration from such organizations as the Texas Rangers, the French Foreign Legion, Knights of the Round Table, and others, they cultivated an image and ethos of daring heroics, relentless dedication, and the highest moral fiber that could be found. It worked. Applicants from all Terran systems came forward. They were the idealists, the romantics, the uncorrupt looking for a way to make a difference. All flocked to the new organization.

Not long after the first class from the Ranger Academy graduated, their legend began. Two Rangers rescued the entire complement of a hijacked ship before either the hijackers or the general public realized they were there, using a combination of wit, fast triggers, and fearlessness. Not long after, another team cracked a trafficking syndiacate, freeing hundreds of captives, confiscating loads of equipment, and capturing several dozen criminals. Unfortunately, they suffered their first casualty in this operation. One of the Rangers was killed trying to absorb the force of an explosion to prevent it from killing the freed prisoners and captured criminals. The galaxy mourned, the Terran Command specifically. Other powers began forming their own Ranger commands and greater cross-jurisdictional cooperation, all following the Terran model.

Over the years, the Rangers grew into a galactic-scale organization, based on Space Station Zebulon, and the heroes of the youth of a thousand species, a prestigious training academy, as well as the older, command academies, and a small fleet and army of personnel.

The Space Rangers were divided among each sector where the Confederacy had jurisdiction, as well as an administrative and command company stationed in Zebulon. Each sector had a Patrol Company, led by a Captain, aided by a Lieutenant, and manned by a varying number of Rangers, depending on the need. Frontier sectors have more Rangers, while more developed sectors with larger and more stable police forces have fewer. Notoriously corrupt sectors will also have more Rangers.

Rangers are either Rangers, Officers, or Operatives. Rangers are the default rank for those who will serve for a minimum enlistment of eight years. Officers are career Rangers and work their way to leadership positions. Normal Rangers can attain non-commissioned status through distinguished service, responsibility, and leadership skills. They the smaller Patrol ships that create a company. Operatives are the elite. They have jurisdiction in all sectors and can draw from local Patrol Companies to aid in an investigation or raid. Typically, they are assigned large cases or targets, like cartels, and work long periods undercover or without support.

Dirk Ellerden, the MC of the novel, is an Officer and Operative for the most part, since he enlists for a career and works his way up to specialize in organized crime. He leads a team of Operatives near the end focusing on the largest crime ring in the galaxy and working on tearing it apart from both the outside and the inside.
