The Pirate War was a short, small scale conflict more well known for the vids made about it and its hero Ranger Dirk Ellerden than any major impact it had on the COnfederacy's state of affairs.
The war began when infamous pirate captain Nermba Pystar was released from prison 30 years after the 7th Expeditionary Squadron, famed for its role in the Atlantean Civil War several hundred years ago, answered a coded signal sent by a prisoner from Pystar's asteroid base and captured him, resulting in the trial of the decade. The source of the signal was never discovered, though allegations of abuse and corruption shadow the victory.
Upon his release, Pystar vanished into the criminal underworld again. Nothing was heard from him for some time, but Space Rangers began dying from accidents soon after. Historians believe it is safe to assume he began his planning and negotiation with other pirate leaders at this time.

Approximately two years later, a large delegation of Confederacy dignitaries and representatives were set to inspect the Space Ranger Academy at Vyn III. Rangers Ellerden and Kraski were on an undercover assignment some time prior. They discovered rumours of a massive attack on the Academy with the intention of taking the delegation hostage. They rushed to the Academy in time to warn them, but not before the pirate fleet arrived.

What followed is not well recorded, and a great deal of incorrect information has been told through media. What scholars are aware of, however, was that the Academy was besieged for two weeks before Ranger Ellerden led the surviving Rangers in a counter-attack against the fleet. It succeeded in smashing through the blockade. However, Ranger Ellerden was the only one to walk away from that battle. All other Rangers were killed, and all the pirates were presumably killed as well. Miraculously, all delegates managed to survive the short war.

Ranger Ellerden returned to the station heavily injured, received treatment, and then vanished. He has not been heard from since.
