So, I'm going to do the full 50k for NaNo this year, I think. No idea why I think I can manage, it though. So, consider this my first and official announcement. (You can skip a ways down if you don't want the full history)

In 1916, the US government began to realize that they could feasibly be drawn into the nightmare of World War One, and given that they could not afford to focus both on fighting the war and dealing with various villains who plagued them, the decision was made to kill both birds with one stone. In the secret halls of government, the Society for Human Improvement was found to complete two purposes.

The primary goal was to create the next stage of evolution for humans, ostensibly for the benefit of the human species, but actually to create a super-soldier so that victory in the looming war would be certain and quick. The secondary goal was to eliminate the threat from hostile scientific geniuses (Colloquially referred to as mad scientists) by employing them in the service of the US government and keeping them happy and occupied. The primary objective failed, of course, but the second worked extremely well. Too well. The members quickly took advantage of their position and maneuvered, blackmailed, and bribed themselves more and more funding, all the while making the society more and more secret. Over the next few decades, the members became less and less public, until everyone figured they'd died in various ways. They didn't. They focused on the society's work.

Before World War 2 came along, they had been completely forgotten about, although they managed to continue gaining government funds through various seemingly innocent channels that all funneled back to them, and they began leasing and renting out their developments for more money. Most of it was just weapons technology, and they sold and dealt with all factions.

They still sought to create super-soldiers, though, planning to use them for their own interests. They recruited volunteers, kidnapped others, worked on using robots, and all sorts of other methods. All failed. The processes usually didn't work, or if they did work, destroyed the volunteer's body, or their mind simply couldn't handle the brainwashing procedures, so sent the victim into a coma.

It went on for quite some time, until the 90s and early 00s. They had their first partial success. A volunteer named Devon Summers, a decorated and idealistic member of the US Army. He survived the physical enhancement process, and it succeeded brilliantly. The brainwashing and mental procedure did not work quite as well, and the scientists thought it was because it conflicted with his already deeply ingrained military training, which they at first thought would be an asset. Most of the programming was successful, but it destroyed the areas of the brain responsible for emotions. He became incapable of feeling emotion, as well as highly skeptical and with a twisted sense of logic. He broke loose from the obedience protocols, and escaped to become the founder of Justice, LLC. and he himself took the name Justice, since he had no memory of his previous identity.

Being the good scientists, they tried again, this time with someone with no military experience, and it succeeded perfectly. Not that they saw it that way since the subject broke out, killed four of the scientists, and completely disappeared using what she learned from them and began hunting the organization down to totally destroy it.

So that's all of the history, I think. The Society is basically my version of A.I.M. Not movie A.I.M, though. They're an incredibly wealthy, powerful, and advanced group of scientists operating from all across the globe, usually in small, hidden labs with 3 to 4 researchers and a security member. The labs have a very intense set of automated defenses and deception tools. They still have influence and connections with the government, and nominally work for them, except it's more like the society uses the government. They'll be a recurring villain, and one of the main villains for Liberator, since of course, she is the second success mentioned in the history.

So... any questions?

That sounds very interesting. So he's the good guy and she's the bad "guy"?

Nope. He's the bad guy. She's the good guy. I'm just not talking about her much in this thread because she'll have her own thread in character development.
