My sister and I had a discussion on why no bodies of dragons are found in this world (unless they're actually dinosaurs) since they probably existed because every nation has legends of them. She decided that the dragon and the phoenix must be the same, and you never find a body because they burned themselves as they died. If you figure on dragons breathing fire by the use of chemical sacs in their heads or throats, then after they die and the chemicals start to ferment, the sacs might burst, mix, and cause the body to catch fire. If you want your dragons to exist in this world, that's a good way to hide some of the evidence.

Interesting. I am unsure whether there were ever dragon-like creatures, but I like your explanation. Neat idea.

Thank you. If the title wasn't clear, I can't use this method in my book so it's open for anyone.

Can I use it in my story, Jazz? I think, with a few minor tweaks, that I might be able to make it work with my Diegose.

That is brilliant. :D

Along those lines, then, one way to kill a dragon could be to pierce through to the sacs, thus mixing the chemicals and causing it to explode.

I never considered this before. Personally, I think dragons and dinosaurs are the same creature. Dragon was just the word to describe them earlier in history (the word "dinosaur" wasn't coined until the 1800s).

Another discussion my family has had... This, however, is based purely on the hypothetical.

I talk about this in my blog series, posted on the Holy Worlds' blog. It's a series on Dragons and Dinosaurs. :)

I absolutely love this concept. What if the dragon's scales were nonflammable, though? Then when they burned they'd leave their scales all over the place. *Has ideas for legends now*

Maybe they're really shiny and sparkly and hard, but get sort of melted. Then, if no one finds the scales, they get buried over time, thus precious stones. :D

I've looked in this famous people through out history have mentioned dragons like Marco Polo who said that the Chinese Emperor had trained dragons to pull his chariot for parades and Alexander the Great said his men were afraid to go into India for it was the land of the Dragon. Now hears the cool part if you look at folklore and pictures of dragons you'll start to see them as dinosaurs because they had nothing else to compare it to like when they say teeth like a lion the painter painted a lion head when they were just describing the teeth.

In this case, I'm referring to what we traditionally picture as dragons (although it can really apply to any race of fire-breathing thing), but that's another way to play with dragons in your own legends.
