Post subject:  An Alternate World-Theory

Lewis is famous for perpetrating the idea that another world having a separate time is what makes the world believable. If God created another world that is different from ours then of course it would be created with a different system of time. That makes sense.

But if the world's time was created with a different system of laws, than why would the different world not have different laws of science as well?

Could the world be flat? Could light bend in a different order? Could the fantasy world be built from a completely different table of elements?

Even if the fantasy world is composed of the same elements, how do we know that our matter would be compatible with the matter of another world? If I entered a fantasy world and kept my body from Earth, would I be able to breath the fantasy world's oxygen, or would I suffocate? Would I be able to touch the ground beneath me, or would I drift through the fantasy world's air and rock, as if I was in a vacuum?

Writing a story with this theory isn't likely to end well -- your world-traveling character is probably doomed for a quick death. But, a slight variation of this theory could work, I think.

Keeping the idea of a Narnian-esque difference in time laws and the idea that a character is affected by their own time, I'm left with a world-traveling character who ages at the same rate of time as Earth. The world-traveling character could stay 20 for ten years of the fantasy world's time, and then change to become 60 in the next six months.

If Narnia had worked like this, than Peter would only have aged a few seconds during his long reign as high king.

Took me long enough to write this. :P Comments? Critiques? ^_^

Hm, intriguing!!! Another thing to ask... if I, made up of our world's elements and laws, travelled into another world with different elements and stuff, might my elements change into that world's equivalent? Or not really changed, but they're just grouped differently, so that I am instead of being weakened, am enabled to do stuff that is seemingly supernatural? Like you're just close enough to be able to survive, but different enough to do awesome stuff. (: Like the brainwaves we emit here act differently in that world, so we can communicate telepathically. Or stuff like that.

I think it would be hard to make a world with different elements that could still work together... It could be done, but it would probably take a lot more work than I'd want to spend on trying to figure out how things would be different if light bended differently and such... Really, I think a different table of elements would take a long time to work through

Flat worlds seem easier and don't seem to require as much thinking.

I like what you have here. :D

But I think that you could say that if God made both of those worlds he could have made them with the same elements while having different "times" similar to how he made all the different organisms on earth with the same system of DNA. Or you could say that since he provided a way for people from here to go to there he provided a way to "convert" them to that world's equivalent of themselves.

I also thought Caleb had some interesting thoughts. :D

Anyway though, I like your idea, it sounds cool and original. ^_^

Intriguing. :D I think that could definitely work with the theory, if not strictly, as a slight variation.

*nods* I don't think I'd want to work through that either. :P

*nods* I've thought of that as the one way the most strict form of this theory would work, but the only way I've thought of doing that is divine intervention. (And even with this idea, there's no guarantee that your character would look the same after having his entire body restructured.)

Thanks. ^_^

I think it really depends on how self-contained your world is. Lewis's world has numerous ties to our own, and so he felt it necessary to stress that Narnia had a different time in order to get across the point that Narnia was an entirely different world.

If your world contains obvious references to our world, characters or objects which are originally from our world, or any other major ties, stressing something like that is necessary.

If your world operates completely independently (the LOTR movies, for example) such things aren't necessary for believability and so become a matter of personal taste.
