Post subject:  Elves?!

I've been saying there are no elves in Vadra, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm mistaken. Inspiration struck me (maybe), when I thought of having a race that would be somewhat allegorical to the spiritual journey that humans undertake as soon as they are born until they reach one of two final destinations: Heaven or Hell. Along the way sometimes we look as if we're headed to one or the other, but only God knows truly where our heart is, and where it will be in the end.

The elves would be a sort of out-of-place race, they would bring an alien beauty- and an inhuman evil.

No one would know where they came from, some would say they were exiled to Vadra as a punishment, others would say they simply lost their way. No one knows for sure what the truth about them is.

They would not die unless killed/starved/whatever, and they would arrive seemingly from nowhere, live as nomads mostly and sometimes settle for a bit. They would travel far and long, and, as they felt the call, leave Vadra forever. Some, however, disobey that call in order to take power and riches in Vadra, these elves, no matter how seemingly harmless they may have been, turn into the most dangerous of enemies to peaceful society. Then some other elves are left in Vadra longer than usual, or until they complete certain tasks (such as fight the evil elves in order to help the more peaceful inhabitants of Vadra).

Do you think they are too similar to Tolkien's elves? What are some ways I could/should make them different? I want to retain a similarity because that is what draws me to them in the first place (same as with dwarves), but I can see doing a lot to make them unique as well. :D

Doesn't sound like Tolkien's elves at all. Tolkien's elves are the epitome of good and righteous. Yours sound evil...and cool. :D

Oh I mean for some of them to be good too, though. Good! I'm glad they seem unique. ^_^

Oh. I couldn't tell. :P
You should post more about them when you develop them some more! What do they eat/look like? Where do they live and in what kind of homes? Do they hunt, and if so, how? What weapons do they prefer? Are they generally peaceful or war-loving?

Could you expound on this inhuman evil?

Do they trump humans in magical/physical strengths? Are they regarded as a superior race to the humans? How do the good elves influence wars and countries and such?

I know...this was just a introducing-the-idea thing...I didn't want to put elves in my world for awhile, this is a slow, tough process for me. XD

I could try. :D I'm thinking that since they are different from humans, and they are immortal they would be (could/would, they are, anyway XD) even more capable of heartlessness and cruelty. They would also have some cobhacal powers that would enable them to be extremely powerful in their evilness and cruelty. I'm starting to wonder if my Super Evil Bad Guy is going to be an elf gone wrong. (probably not the creative answer you were looking for. :P but these guys are still in the devving stage. ;))

Not necessarily. They all have natural cobhacal/magical power, yes, but they are not necessarily superior to humans, much as they may think they are. Their main advantage, if it can be called such, is their long life, which allows them to become very good, or very bad, depending on which way they go.

I'm not sure exactly yet, but they will have certain powers and technologies(?) to bring to the table, I'm sure. :D

(sorry about the vagueness guys, I'll be posting more on my subforum eventually, hopefully soonish)

I think they're pretty neat. It's a nice balance between Tolkien and non-Tolkien especially with the unknown origins. It almost makes them seem like souls in a Great Divorce style purgatory. Pretty cool. :D

Oh, good! I was hoping to have some of the Tolkienesque essence while being somewhat unique. ^_^ I'm glad you like 'em. :dieshappy:

Ooh, I need to read that book! :D They are, in a way, souls... Interesting. ... ^_^

Aaaah...so this could possibly be a situation like before The Flood? When people lived longer and were stronger/smarter, there was more capacity to wreak havoc?

Okay, here's a hopefully more in-depth thread about them, though I think it's just rambly and disorganized. :P viewtopic.php?f=148&t=6814
