(You'll like this one, Lycanis.)

The poison-fanged wolf (needs a better name ) is a creature specific to Iuthernya, the main country of a land I created that still needs a name ( I'm terrible with names).

It resembles a wolf, except it is bigger. Taller and more powerful, but no faster than a normal wolf when running. Their fur ranges from dark brown to midnight black, and their eyes seem to glow. Their teeth are long and pointed; made expressly for getting a grip on flesh and not letting it escape, ripping meat, etc.

Their rather thick saliva contains a deadly poison that coats their teeth. One good bite will kill a human within 2-3 minutes. A lesser bite will, of course, take longer to kill the victim, and a tiny one may even be treatable, but if a wolf is that close to you, you're usually dead anyway.

They travel in packs. They do not like water, and not all of them will deign to chase their quarry through water, so the packs sometimes split and some will run through the water while the others won't. They will rejoin the pack later, bringing back the dead prey if they caught it.

I'll put an excerpt or two here so y'all can see how they come into play:

Quote:
These are no normal wolves. These are the large, albeit heavy kind, with razor-sharp claws, perfect night vision, and poisoned teeth. The only good thing: You won't live long after being bitten, if they get a good, strong bite. At least their claws are not venomous.
Starrett splashes through another, deeper stream, and this time only two of the wolves deign to wet their fur. He is beginning to slow now-he is not a race-horse; this chase is tiring him.
“Go on, Starrett! You can do it!”
A branch hits my cheek. My eye begins to tear right above it, and I know I shall have a bruise. From that point on, I keep my head as far down as it will go.
Starrett pulls up short, and I raise my head. The wolves have fronted him.
This is my end, I think, half-regretful. I hope it does not hurt too much. I know, though, that this is a false hope.
Then Starrett rears high, and I am thrown off. I land in a heap on the ground, my head hitting a root, and I just manage to keep awake long enough to see Starrett's hooves come down to crush one of the wolves. His head shoots down and his strong, oat-grinding teeth bite down on the last wolf's neck. He thrashes back and forth until it is still.
And then my eyes close.

Quote:
We hasten along the path, back toward the road that I was foolish for leaving, though Starrett seems to be tiring very quickly.
“What's wrong, boy?” I then have a horrible thought. “Did they get their teeth into you?” I jump down without further ado and check him over. He has the claw marks on his rump, scratches from branches, but I see no bite marks.
Until I stand in front of him, petting his nose, and he nickers and pulls away.
“Starrett?” I guide his head back to face me with a gentle hand, and find small but inflamed tooth marks in the side of his nose. “Oh, no.” It does not look like he was bitten badly enough to kill him, but even a little amount of poison causes much pain, and after a while, fever and vomiting in humans. If they survive the first hour. “I'm so sorry, Starrett,” I choke, beginning to cry. If I had known, I never would have ridden him. How could I not have noticed? This is why he has seemed so tired and odd.

Any questions? Comments? Name suggestions?

:D These sound neat!

Do they have as much

So from the beginning they were created to kill?

Do they have the same level of endurance normal wolves have?

Why don't they like water?

Are their claws sharper than normal wolves'?

Yeah, pretty much.

Haven't thought much about that. I guess they'd have around the same amount, maybe a little more.

That's like asking why cats don't like water, or why bats don't like the sun. That's just how they are.

A little longer, I think, and perhaps a little sharper, considering how much more epic their teeth are than normal wolves'.
Thanks for reading! :D

They're too dangerous, Wuvvy. I wouldn't give anyone I liked a poison-fanged wolf.

Yes. They're not that central to the plot anyway; just to a couple of chapters. Well, so far... I may have to bring them back in.

Anything else we need to know about them?

So the saliva is poisoned? How does that not affect the wolf? Or has the wolf developed an antivenom?

Obviously, the wolf is immune to it, otherwise the first one ever would have died quite quickly. If a wolf bites another wolf, the only thing to worry about would be the injury, not the poison.

Okay, that makes sense. But how is it immune to it? Does it have bacteria that kill the poison? Or does the poison attack the brain/spine/whatnot and the wolf has special protection in that area?

Hmm, I hadn't really thought about that. How are snakes not affected by their own venom?

I'm not positive, but I think snakes have venom sacs which give them the sort of diamond-shaped head. When they bite, they can choose to insert venom through their teeth (but I'm not sure). Therefore, they aren't getting the venom into their system because they keep it in their venom sacs or they eject it into their victim.

Oh yeah... Well then, I suppose I'll give the stomach acid an anti-venom...
Yes. Okay so they're protected if they swallow their saliva, but the poison can still affect them if they're bitten.

Interesting. So does the poison affect one of the wolves more or less quickly than it would affect a human?

Since the wolves are stronger, more powerful, etc, I think it would take longer. But it all depends on the size of the bite.

Interesting... can a person kill a wolf and harvest the antivenom?

I was just considering that; I think I'd say yes, although it's not often that a person is able to kill a wolf. Especially since they hunt in packs.

How would a person go about harvesting the antivenom?

*chuckles* Anything special to that? (A process for harvesting only the anti-venom and none of the other stomach juices for example.)

I actually haven't thought about any of the harvesting stuff, y'all are doing a really good job helping me develop my little pups. :D
I'm guessing they put it through some sort of strainer... Maybe the thicker stuff that stays in the strainer is the antivenom, and the stuff that goes through is the other stuff?
(By the way, does anyone else realize how utterly disgusting this is?)

Hmm... perhaps. I would think that the anti-venom would just be a liquid. However, I'm no expert.
(Nah, 'tis fun. ;))

Maybe it will settle at the top though, as a lighter liquid than the other juices?

That's a good idea...if the antivenom floated on the top, it would take care of the poison before the rest of the juices touched it...

Nah, not really, actually. I only have a problem with the actual killing...I usually stay inside until the goat is dead, but after that, I'm good. XD

Chickens, on the other hand, have very little distinctive personalities. It doesn't feel like murder to kill them.

*Cough* Sorry for derailing your thread, Hobbit.

Nice, Shorty! These are well-developed. :D (And yes, the harvesting of the antivenom does sound quite gross!)

One question: What is their size and weight? For example, we know they are bigger then wolves, but how much bigger? Great-dane size, horse size, shed size, house size- I hope not! And how heavy are they? :D

Probably a foot longer from tip to tail? And however relatively taller that would make them. They're more muscular too. I don't know how heavy they are. o.O I've never weighed one.

So mainly like extra-large wolves, then. :D

 If you really want to figure out the weight, try looking up the weight of a wolf and adding some onto it.
