Post subject:  Saturdays: The riddle birds

These small, sparrow sized song birds travel in huge flocks across Rantis. They look plump and are usually seen sleeping during the day so those who know little about them label them as lazy, hence their name Saturdays.

Their coloring is a sleek pearly color that glimmers in the light. They like to roost in remote places and thick wood, so to see them is a given that you're lost. They do like to help those who are lost but they can only speak in riddles. What they do is flock at dawn in a rippling dance across the gray sky, twinkling like the stars fading with the sun's light. They chant their rhyme as one, a chorus of voices, not singing but speaking softly like a bubbling creek and then their voices escalating to a thunderous clapping of wings as the sky turns pink. Suddenly, the first rays of sunlight alight the sky with white brilliance. When the flash subsides, the birds are gone, having finished their role and now gone to look for a place to sleep till evening.

It is rumored that they glow.

These sound incredibly fascinating. I love that they speak in riddles, and that they glow!

Ooh, I love these little birdies! Do they chant in a language all their own, or in the language of the dominant race?

Post subject:  Re: Saturdays: The riddle birds

Those sound awesome! I really like how you named them 'Saturdays' because they seem lazy to people, that's funny, and clever! They also sound like a good plot possibility, someone gets lost, and has to solve a riddle...Cool! Good job!

@ Runningwolf- Lillylight gave me the idea. :) *Looks for the conversation in the chat log*

Anyway... Any... critiquing thoughts? Anyone? Details I might have left out?

@Milly- Good question... They speak in a mix of the two languages. Neh heh heh. They used to only speak Skrac until the valloian race surfaced from under the mountains from generations past. When the race took the Yewin jungles as part of their empire, the Saturdays took up the language of the earth and now speak them both as one. A REAL riddle. ;)

Well, here's a few questions I can think of:
Are any of them evil? Do those that are evil (or maybe just mischievous, which would be funnier!) try to confuse the riddle?
Are there any genetic problems (like albinos, but different) that might make them: look different, think different, sound different, or have some unusual ability?
Are some of them charged to direct those that come a-wandring, that are told to tell certain people certain things, while your main character happens to ask a question, or something, that cues them onto a different riddle that gives him other instructions (that lead him into a trap, or guide him on his quest)?

Hope these get your creative juices flowing!

Could you rephrase that? *scratches head*

Yes, I'm developing a different species called Whisperwings. I'll make a different thread for them. Also, the Saturdays are mainly mysterious, speaking a mix of languages so... anything more would be overdoing it. ;)

I don't think so... Maybe... :/ There not a huge attribute to the story so they don't need that much complexity. It's the riddles that are the most important factor.

Lol, sorry, I didn't word that well. I meant would it be feasible to have them (or some of them) maybe be guarding something (like a secret path), and steer most people away from something desirable (like treasure, a relic, a sleeping princess, lol), but tell your character how to get to it (through riddles). Really that only works if your plot has anything to do with a long lost something that people are looking for, I hope that makes sense and maybe sparks some ideas...

Haha, that's awesome. :D I wanna meet a Saturday. What happens if you meet a Staurday on a Saturday, I wonder? ;)

I wasn't aware that I gave ideas, but I'm glad to have helped if I did. :D I'm glad you gave them shape and personality. Now... where's the closest pet store in Rantis so I can buy one? :D

Wait... why would a Saturday try to lead someone to something they don't want them to find??

Lady Aris Lillylight wrote:

Yes, they are pets and you can buy one in the many villages in Yana'ra. Their riddles annoy some people so they aren't super popular but most poets and artistic people own one. It's recommended that you buy at least two. They are very social.

Oh... there are a few things I forgot to mention. The Saturdays raise their young together and are always traveling from place to place. Their diet consists of fruit and nuts and have a life span of about five years.

Post subject:  Re: Saturdays: The riddle birds

I'm not saying they would lead someone to something they don't want them to find. Just never mind, I'm sorry I can't articulate. It was probably not the sort of idea you would be interested in anyway...

Post subject:  Re: Saturdays: The riddle birds

What Wolf means (correct me if I'm wrong, Wolf) is that if there was a secret, or a treasure which is supposed to be sacred, or not found ever, do the Saturdays guard it, and maybe guide people around or away from it.

Post subject:  Re: Saturdays: The riddle birds

Thank you, Lady El. I was hoping someone would help me out! :) But I was also suggesting that if there was one person that WAS supposed to find it, and they knew they were supposed to, or suspected that they were supposed to find it, they would give that person a riddle that would lead them to the thing (I suspect that didn't make any more sense than my other ramblings, if that is so, just ignore my idea).

Aah, I think that's a neat idea, Wolf! :) Yes, it could work both ways. *Nods*

Post subject:  Re: Saturdays: The riddle birds

The Saturdays aren't guardians, they are friendly guides. I can't really think of any treasures or anything that should be guarded, besides the massive prison of Wallin Isle... But if there are any... locked away powers I guess you could call it (thinking of Zelda here) then your idea could be useful.

I like it, I like it a lot!

I understand it might never prove fitting for your stories, but I'm glad you like it! Whatever you do, have fun with those birds! They're pretty awesome!

Neat creatures, Seabird. :D Have you incorporated these birds into any of your stories or are they just a part of worldbuilding for now?

I can imagine them as hilarious parrot-like pets. :D

I have them incorporated in the upcoming plot of Peacekeeper's Essence. Somewhere in ch. 11 or 12... I'm currently on ch. 10.

Aren't mind maps amazing? I planned out three chapters in fifteen minutes. Actually thats four chapters since ch. 9 came out longer and more complex than I first expected. :P

Ignore that last quote. Keep with the thread please. ;)
