The other day I was laying out where some of my largest cities will go and I realized I needed to know what the draw for the location was besides defense and access to water. So I took my working map and put in different natural resources over the land. From there i plan to build my cities in relationship to these natural resources.

Has anyone else done anything like this? I'd be interested to see your results if you have.

This is a major item on my to-do list that I keep putting off, nominally because there isn't a good tool for doing this and all the other related and interconnected map-editing tasks. (As I've lamented on my blog a few times.) How did you decide what to put where on your map.

(On the other hand, I recently did something similar to the map I'm using for the current campaign of my strategy game---except that the world is all but empty now and fairness and small-scale verisimilitude are more important goals than big-picture realism, so randomly generating a few things for every tile was a reasonable strategy that worked well there, but would not be suitable for any map for the Shine Cycle.)
