I need help figuring out how to make Wizards/Witches/Sorcerers for my book.
I'm trying to develop magic as well. Can any one answer questions like: Should magic use your energy? Should magic be invisible or have a blue tint to it? Should you have to have a staff or a wand or some magical item to be able to use magic? Should you have say words to use magic? Should I maybe use magic in the way they used it in Eragon or like in Lord of the Rings or some other book? Any tips or questions?

Thanks. :)

The first rule is... well... I don't think there are any rules.

It all depends on you and your world. Often, one picks a kind of magic that will fit well with whatever their theme is, or what the world building they've done so far, etc... But in the end, it all depends on what you like and what makes sense in your world. :D

I would suggest that you don't make your magicians invincible, but I suppose that there is even a place for that. :D

I'd say how you go about setting up the magic of your world also depends on whether your magic users are good guys or bad guys.

Good question, that one is. :D
In my world, both good and bad can use magic, but also think about this: Is there a good and bad in your world that is the resource of the magic? (That sounds funny the way I worded it  ) What I am trying to say is, where does the magic come from? The elements? The God figure in your book, if there is one? Does it come from spells or magical pots of purple stew? Probably not the last one, but I think those are some things to think about when creating a magic system. :)

Any good or bad guy can use magic.

In my world words have power. You have to figure out the word/words for a task. (If that makes sense.)

In that case, a question would be where do the words get their powers from. Is it like magic in the world of Earthsea, in which the world was sung into existence and the words of the language that the creator used are inherently powerful. Or is it more like The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon) in which created beings bound magic that already existed naturally to a certain language? This is explained in the second book, Eldest. Or like Jay's world, Ithelak, in which God gives the created beings languages that ontologically have power? That is a very boiled down paraphrase of my understanding of it *hopes this comment doesn't invoke a long explanation in Lauserese of the inaccuracy of his statement*

Next would be whether the power is in the words themselves (like Earthsea and Ithelak) or if the words are a construct used to channel energy that has its source elsewhere (like Eragon, in which the words control the magic, but the energy comes from the wielder).

Mainly like Eragon.

You need to also make sure your magic is not too attainable it could get pretty ridiculous if everyone was running around using magic.
Also you need a way of keeping it so that everything can be done with magic and nothing can stop them. Where is the fun if you know they can always win no matter how hard it is.

You also need repercussions for your magic. I don't like reading books where there is no cause and effect. Then it becomes super power. ;)

As much as I would like to help you Danko, I can't. I think that you should choose those things depending on your own, personal opinion and what you think that the readers will enjoy most :) Sorry!

But, one thing that I would like for you to use is that if it is a big and powerful spell, it should use a lot of the user's energy. Otherwise, anybody could just use big spells whenever and it won't have an affect and it will seem like lazy writing :D Hope that helped!
