Elvari are humanoid with a flexible spine crest down their back.

The Elvari’s eyes are blue, green, brown, hazel or indigo. All the colors are very vivid. The pupil shape is round.

They have no hair, but a scaly sort of skin that is the same color as the crest covers the top of their head where the hair would be. The crest starts at the crown of their head, goes down the nape of their neck, and follows their spine until it melds back into the skin of their lower back. It is made of bony spines with membrane in between, like a bat’s wing. The color varies – gold/blond, black, red, and silver-blue or silver-green are seen frequently. Silver-purple is less common.

Their noses are moderately sharp and prominent.

Their ears are pointed on top.

Their skin is medium dark to moderately pale. It is thin, like the Raechal’s, but doesn’t heal as quickly or scar as easily.

The ability to hide emotions varies from person to person depending on personality. The forehead is high and the cheekbones prominent. The jawline varies from soft to strong depending on the genetics. Their build is moderately delicate. Their height averages 5’ 10” to 6’ 3”. The limbs are long and not overly muscled. Their general build is thin, lithe and built for quick motion.

Sight rated at 4, touch at 4, hearing at 3 ½, taste at 3 ½, smell at 3. A weakness is pain (they are less tolerant of pain than any other race) and direct stares. Their movement is very quick, graceful, and agile with moderate strength and stamina.

They live best in a mixed or hilly habitat. They can work magic with extraordinary ease but have difficulty sustaining it.

Their talents or gifts from God are skills in the fine arts, such as music, dancing, painting, sculptures and the fancier forms of swordplay. Their cities are always very well-built and ornate. They have an eye for detail and love to blend different styles or materials together, such as pencils with watercolors or wicker and stone. For a reason unknown, they love vines of any sort.

They hate extremes. Balance is important to them. Their faith is strong but can be twisted by anyone with enough subtlety.

Their surnames are combinations of two words, such as Darkstar, Dawnson, Moonchild, Fairbrow, etc. These names are given individually and depend on the lineage, coloring, and characteristics of the child.

They are highly attuned to things of a spiritual nature. They are either good or evil, and if they try to “sit on the fence” they will be very uncomfortable. Because of this, most Elvarian societies are either entirely good or entirely corrupted. Those who do not conform are outcasts. This is one thing they will not compromise. They value art of any sort that is symmetrical and detailed. They also value history and legends and take great care to keep them accurate.

They like parties and will contribute heavily when the occasion is appropriate, but usually they will not celebrate for anything less than a national holiday.

Their leaders are chosen by royal blood or by a fostering system (i.e., the king takes in the son of a lord, if the king has no sons before he dies the lord’s son will rule.) Queens are rare.

Overall, they are a deep, serious, sensitive race who don’t like to be trifled with. If you can step carefully around them, they are loyal for a lifetime.

That is a very good description. I knew exactly what you were trying to have me imagine.

Now I could get into this! Their spin makes me think of those spiny finned dinosaurs.

How far does their spine fin thing stick out? I ask because it could inhibit quick movements if it is large enough to grab air draft during movement.

Wait, Iri has a spin fin thing coming out of his back?! How did I miss that?

Be careful of your thoughts; guard your mind, for your thoughts become words. Be guarded when you speak, for your words turn into action. Watch what you do, for your actions will become habits. Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you. Instead, He’s opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

Good. I was hoping it would be clear. It's a difficult concept to convey. :P

It doesn't stick out in normal situations. It's flexible and (like a Tuliran's tail) displays their emotions depending on its stance. If they're relaxed it lies relatively flat, but if they're angry it flares up and sticks out straight, and if they're afraid it will press flat against their back. They can control it if they want. Rather like your facial expression - if your physical reaction to a feeling of suspicion is to raise an eyebrow, you can keep from doing that, but only if you're thinking about it.

Oh, dear. :/ I knew someone would confuse that. Well, I guess now is as good a time as any to explain...If you've read my history, you remember about the Portal War, right? Here:

"The magicians rigged [the Portals] to take only Elvari blood and energy. Suddenly, the Elvari were useful. Instead of being killed on sight, many were used to transport their enemy’s supplies and troops with their own blood and strength. It was a slow, cruel, sucking death as their energy seeped out into the yellow stones used to build the Portals. Many Elvarian captives committed suicide rather than being used as a living sacrifice.
The Elvarian morale dipped considerably after that. In an attempt to compensate, the Elvari magicians experimented with their own theory and formed a brilliant strategy. With the magic, they hid the reptilian crest and scales that defined their race and gave most of their troops hair like the Humans. These strange mixes were used as spies quite effectively until caught. When caught, the confused Humans named the spies Elves."

Elves, which exist only in Carseld, maintain all the physical characteristics of the Elvari except the crest and scales. They have hair and look like a modified human (pointed ears, patches of scales on the backs of their hands, elbows, and knees, a lithe build like their previous form). Eventually the segment of the race living in Carseld all became Elves, and through the generations began losing their ability to change between forms like the first Elves. The only way to keep that ability is to train children to switch forms (Elven children have the ability when they're born and a few years after, but they lose it before the age of ten, usually). Iri was trained by his mother to change forms, but through the first and second books I believe he uses the Elven form exclusively. In the third one he changes when he leaves Carseld, so as to fit in with the natives of Yriae, who of course are not Elves but Elvarians.

Clear as mud? :P

Oh! Yes, I like that. It is based off of emotion and is controllable. :D

*smacks self * Oh yes! Now I remember that! Yeah, perfectly clear, I just needed retelling. I forgot about that bit of back-story. It's been a while since I read that bit. Now this all makes sense.

Much clearer than mud. :D

*loves this development *
