I was curious as to how people in your worlds are educated. :book:

Are they taught by their parents? Is there a school? Private tutors? Every man for themselves? Are there different education methods for children vs. adults? Different cultures or races?

I've never truly been able to decide on how I want the educational system of my world Ailevian to be. I am leaning towards an institution or university for older people and for children to be educated privately. Perhaps there are only a few universities in Ailevian so people who wish a formal education must travel to other cities.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the educational systems of fantasy worlds? How are you doing them? How do you think it was best to do them? Also, historically, how was it done in the middle-ages in the real world? I'm curious about all of these.

Good question, Aeo. :)

I have different races in my world, and each race is different. With my Te Warriors, the children stay with their parents until they are about 8 years old, then they are trained by the higher level Te Warriors; they still see their parents, but a lot of their time is spent training away from them.

With my Lamig the children stay with their parents until they are 16, the women raise them, the fathers have little to do with teaching them at all during their younger years. At 16 they are taken away from home to be more with their fathers and trainers.

My Elvish culture is completely different. They are very close families. I haven't worked a lot on my Elves yet, but I am going to have them stay at home on a close home environment.

Basically I think that you can have what you like, make it fit in with the kind of culture you want. :) In the Middle Ages there were few schools for girls, mostly boys received school education, the girls were taught at home.

Among humans, in the Shine and Wild Empire—which is what I've spent most of my efforts developing—most children are educated by their parents as long as possible, but as some form of education (requiring a minimal level of competence in certain core skills, mainly literacy and basic math) is compulsory from age eight or so there are many (generally small, even in urban areas) schools run by various groups (even the government in some areas, though this is by no means universal). For more advanced education, there is an established system of apprenticeships, but most crafts also provide trade schools, and there are general / liberal-arts colleges and universities, most notably the Imperial Academy (which began as an academy for military officers, but has become the premier school in just about everything except music, the Power, and some trades). One of the Chosen, after her arrival with the rest in 110, established what became a network of regional teachers' colleges. Advancement within a school is generally based on competence and merit; "social promotion" is all but unheard-of.

Good question. I'm debating with myself about this too.
I know the elves are schooled from the beginning, and my halfeleven never stop learning, but they are quite specific about what they learn. Merchants (who have something resembling a union) are taught, mainly because they have to be able to read and do math and such.
In Kythen, where I'm working right now, I'm unsure. I'm leaning towards children learning their three r's very early on, with any further study in politics or history or whatever an individual choice and responsibility.
I'm guessing at least a few of my countries will have universities, and possbly strict schooling from childhood onwards.
Try and think about the culture and ideals of your world. If yours is a race of mostly peaceful, unambitious people, it makes sense that they won't need much schooling. If, however, politics and war are a big part of even the common man's strict schooling system will be necessary.
Remember that in the middle ages the common man couldn't read. Schooling was given only to the priviledged- Sons of nobles.
