The Fae are a humanoid race gifted with various powers. They are immortal, but this only means that they won't die of old age or disease; they can be killed. There are seven subsets of Fae, divided by appearance and powers. More accurately, there are four types of Fae and I want there to be seven. ;)

Light Fae
The Light Fae are tall, with very pale skin. Their hair tends to be white with gold or silver highlights. Their eyes are golden and emit a faint glow. The extent of their powers is currently unknown, but they can create light and use it either defensively or offensively. They can also "see" without using their eyes in an area around them provided there is enough light. The area can be extended in one direction through conscious thought.
The surname for the Light Fae is H'var.

Shadow Fae
The Shadow Fae are also tall. They have a dark complexion and black hair, and their eyes are very dark. Again, the extent of their powers is unknown. They are capable of traveling from one shadow to another. This is not instantaneous, but it is considerably faster than walking would be. Most Shadow Fae can take one passenger along without harm.
The surname for the Shadow Fae is Z'ul.

Beast Fae
The Beast Fae vary widely in height and appearance. Each Beast Fae can transform into one type of animal, and their humanoid form has some resemblance to their beast form. The transformation may be their only power.
The surname for the Beast Fae is K'yeh.

Water Fae
The Water Fae are on the shorter side, with very slender builds. They are light skinned, with pale hair tinted very slightly blue. Their hands and feet are webbed. They can breathe underwater and can create it at times.
The surname for the Water Fae is M'yom.

So! Please ask me questions about them. I would also love suggestions for other types of Fae. I don't have to have seven for the story to work, I just...prefer it.

Those are cool. Suggestions: Earth Fae (with their power related to soil and rock), Wood Fae (with their power related to wood and plants), Wind Fae (with their power related to air and weather).

Time Fae, Space Fae, Winter Fae, Spring Fae, Wind Fae, Crystal Fae, War Fae, Metal Fae, Fire Fae...

Do the Fae live like normal people? Do they intermingle with humans? Other Fae?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!

@Vili: Mostly, yes, they live like normal people. Intermingling with humans is rare. There was a period of time where humans and Fae lived together in one city, but it ultimately fell apart and since then they don't have much contact with each other. Fae live with other Fae all the time, though. They aren't particularly solitary people for the most part.

Do the Shadow Fae like blend into one shadow and then kinda appear the same way in a different shadow or is it like they just blink out and blink back in somewhere else? Is there an extent to how far they can go?

Plant Fae, Wind Fae, Ice Fae, Earth Fae, Stone Fae, Magnetic Fae, Weather Fae, or Fire Fae.

It's more the blending into a shadow and then blending out of one elsewhere. I haven't decided yet if there's a limit.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. After some thought and discussion with my brothers, the remaining three types of Fae are Wood, Crystal, and Wind. Wood will involve things like plants, Wind will involve weather, and Crystal will actually involve metal, as apparently metal has a crystalline structure. :D More details to come.

"Pops head in" Curious you say they're a humanoid race but fae is another way of saying fairy. ;) Is that what you mean?

Ooh, yes, details please!! Sounds amazing. So now there's light, shadow, beast, water, wood, wind, and crystal.

The only question I have now is... why limit it to seven? Is there something fundamental, basic, or core about those seven particular types of fae? If there's no reason to limit it to seven {other than "the other suggestions weren't that great"}, then the reader might not be convinced. Just a thought here!

Well, they certainly aren't the tiny winged beings that people tend to think of when they hear "fairy," so I didn't want to use that term. :) I'm also not sure how fairy-like they are, to be honest.

*cough* I, uh, forgot about this thread. I'll try to put together more info on the new types of Fae soon.

Why seven? Primarily because I like the number. :D As it happens, though, those particular seven do go together nicely. They're caretakers of the world, working together to keep things peaceful...or at least, that's how it was supposed to work. I plan to talk more about that when I get around to describing the rest of the Fae types.

Heh. Well, originally I was only going to have water, and was deliberately avoiding the others because I didn't want it to be the four elements. Then when I was discussing the suggestions people had made with my brothers, wind and crystal were decided on and fit really well. You could probably argue that the Light Fae fill in the fire element, actually, which was probably another part of my decision to avoid a specifically fire Fae.

@Leandra I think the #7 has some sort of significance as a number of biblical completion. You could incorporate that into it. :D

That's actually why I like it. :D I don't think anything like that will be specifically stated, but yeah, that's the origin of my fondness for the number seven.

I like the idea of seven. Completeness.

I would hesitate to have them restricted to just one or two magical gifts.

You would have to call upon so many different ones to get anything done. Then suddenly you have an overabundance of characters that make the reader's head spin.

Can you group them in a way that brings similarities together and gives each one more power?

Everyone's suggestions of a moon fae, wind fae, tree fae, etc. It's a sort of everything under the sun -fae. But if each fairy has one or two characteristics only, then the overload of characters to accomplish everything is hard for readers to track.

If there is a general "earth fae" that would encompass, soil, sea, organic life...etc. Then a "sky fae" which could include moon, stars, wind, etc.
The powers are divided between fewer categories. Of course you want seven fae, so take the list of all that have been suggested and see if you can divide them into seven groups, putting similar things together.
Wind, air, oxygen, gas elements could be one with a magic of power-wind, solar, gas, fuel, etc . Minerals/elements could be another along with soil-magic of metallurgy creations. Organic life-trees, bushes, flowers etc. could be grouped with a magic of healing powers.

I hope that made more sense. Sorry it is late and I am suddenly sleepy. LOL

It makes sense, thanks. :)

I'm definitely wanting them to be able to do things by themselves, so the categories will probably have some breadth to them, even if the names seem a little narrow (current plan, for example, is for Wind Fae to have power over weather and air and the like).

I like what you say, but if something like this was put together, then could it cause a problem?

What I'm trying to say is: If you bring every type of fae together, and each has multiple powers, they would be able to control everything, and be...well, unstoppable. Wouldn't it be giving the fae too much power? If you do not have all the powers, and fae limited to one or two amazing abilities, then you would be able to present problems that they would have to escape without their abilities/powers. It would not be a "mindless" task, if you know what I mean. (That may not be the correct word, but that's all that comes to mind at the moment.)

Just some thoughts. What do you think?
