Post subject:  Vitarentel and Her Nations

This is an elvish map of the continent of Vitarentel (or, the Maker's Realm in English (sorry, but the elves are the only race that I have done extensive exploration and mapping, due to the fact that they were tasked by The Maker to guard the lesser races)) In the far north is the Jadeln Díelvana (Frozen Wasteland). To the Southwest of the Frozen Waste, just below the mountain range, is Elleavemarr, the elf-forest. it is mainly deciduous, with many blooming trees, flowers, lakes, and the stunning Zalen-Draeo (weeping trees), which only grow on the lakes around the elvish capital of Celinorel (Blooming Rose). Just for a brief description, the Weeping Trees have shinning leaves, the color of polished sapphire (not to be confused with the Tree of Souls from Avatar (NO!!! Not even REMOTELY related! )

To the east of the elf lands lies the Territory of the Elvurs. An evil race of wolves that grow larger than horses and can jump over thirty-foot walls, they have poison fangs.

To the south of both Elleavemar and the Elvurs-lands, there lies wilderness. And sandwiched between the wilderness areas lies Kudarentel (The Monster's Realm), home of the Dark One, and place of origin for the goblins, trolls, kudaren, and the sorcerers.

To the east of the Monster's Realm is Fordingbraun, the land of the dwarves, a realm ringed and filled with mountains. The dwarves live largely underground, and one could walk the length and breadth of Fordingbraun without seeing daylight.

To the east of Fordingbraun is the Heuskan Desert (Literally the Bone-Dry desert), home of the Arabs and Africans (I will be coming up with fictional names for these to ethnic groups of men, but that may not be until Book 4 or 5, and I haven't even started with them).

And finally, on the furthest southern tip of the continent, is the realm of Telnor. Telnor is the seat of my book series, and so I have gone deeper into the planning of the fauna and geography of it. It is high and mountainous, and very rainy. It is split into 20 different Provinces, but it falls mainly into three different geographical divisions, The Great Plain, The Foothills, and The Great Forest. The majority of the country is covered by the great Pine Forests, but large amounts of land are also plains, allowing for sheep, cattle, and horses.

Let me know what you think of the map and the descriptions, and pick them both apart...

Well described. I'm glad to see you've already got an entire series on the way. :D

How did the monsters in The Monster's Realm originate?

"How did the monsters in The Monster's Realm originate?"

Well, Essentially, I wanted a race that could effectively combat my elves, who are super strong and smart, so I made something akin to the Uruk-Hai from LOTR. Expect a post sometime soon in the races section regarding the elves and the Kudaren...

The name for the Monster's realm was given to that area on the map because it is the realm of the Dark One, and the place of Origin for the Kudaren...

Simply because I could come up with no better name during the making of this map. :)

It looks pretty cool, but I have to think I'm not the only unenlightened mortal who would really like a version of that map with labels in English. I can't figure out what's what with the Elvish ones. If you have Photoshop or the GIMP(free) that should be pretty easy to do without destroying the current map. Either that or maybe post a key in the Scriptorium for decoding your Elvish script.

I'm working on a 19x25 map of Vitarentel in English. I can fit more detail on something that big, and I figured it would look nice on my dorm wall when I go to New Hope Christian College next fall.

Yep, and the best part is, I know someone who has a scanner big enough for it, and they said I could use it! As soon as it is finished I'll probably get a picture of me holding it and put it on here.

But there are so many mountain ranges...

Ah yes, mountain ranges: the bane of the cartographer. At least this cartographer. ;) Can't wait to see the map! :D

If you're using Photoshop, there's a half-dozen good tutorials online for drawing various styles of mountains :D I could dig up some linkses if you're interested. :)

@Milly, Yeah... I'm drawing them Tolkien style, with shadows on the left sides.

@Eru, No, I'm doing it the old-fashioned way... by hand... I contemplated doing it with photoshop or some other computer program, but I can't figure out how to get it to work... Besides, I like doing hand drawn maps ! :D

Ah, OK. By hand is definitely fun. :D (I'd do mine by hand, except we move so much it just works out better on the computer :)) What type of paper are you going to use? Do you have one sheet that size?

Post subject:  Re: Vitarentel and Her Nations

I just had a single sheet of poster paper, I don't know what type it is, but it's working just fine. I have the rivers, one of the forests, and all of the mountain ranges done now. I still need to finish the shadows on two of the mountain ranges, and decide whether or not to include borders, which kind of make things confusing with forests and all that other stuff thrown in... Then when I'm done I need to ink it all.
