The upside to chatting is...sometimes you get genius questions that warrant the phrase "I should make a thread about that!" This would be one of those questions.

So, Sezja randomly asked what happens when a peasant marries royalty?

A good example of this would be Tangled. The two...people who's names I can't remember get married in the end (I know! I just ruined the ending!) and neither of them have any training as to how to rule a kingdom. Flynnwhatshisname used to be a thief and Rapuncantrememberhowtospellthat has been locked in a tower her whole life...which could pose problems.

So, how do you think they'd overcome these intellectual hurdles so they can rule their kingdom in peace and sovereignty?

There could be people that advise them in how to rule like: advisors (yes I know what I just did :P ) or prime ministers.

We need a green person to move this to a different forum. It isn't really about theology, but I'll leave this to wiser heads to figure out where it should go.

Be careful of your thoughts; guard your mind, for your thoughts become words. Be guarded when you speak, for your words turn into action. Watch what you do, for your actions will become habits. Be wary of your habits, for they become your character. Pray over your character; strive to mold it to the image of Christ, because your character will shape your destiny.

Ideas can germinate from the smallest seeds. Collect those seeds, and let them grow in the back of your mind. You may be surprised by what finally blooms.

Yep, we noticed that... it just slipped our minds to move it out after I was told to whence it should be moved. Our mistake. Moving to Culture...

They'd have to take night school on all the essential skills. Other than that, it's a lot of etiquette to study, politics, familiarization with treaties, national laws, and other stuff rulers need to know.

Essentially, it would be a lot of studying and trial and error.

Also, in that particular story, the reigning monarchs were her parents. They would care for the kingdom for many years before Rapunzel and Flynn, and by that point they would both be educated. Their life experiences also make them uniquely qualified to rule.

I am very late to this thread! :dieshappy:
I'd just like to note that being raised as a commoner does not have to be a bad thing... They would know more honor and respect for others, they would know the people very well and their needs, and they wouldn't be "spoiled brats" like people raised in the castle!

This is one of those questions that has two answers - the serious and the fanciful.

In the case of a fairytale like Rapunzel, you can safely ignore the royalblood's lack of training in favor of the mystery and "magic" of a fairytale. It's fiction!

In a more serious novel, however, you set yourself ahead by thinking of realism aspects like this. :D There are several ways for the newly discovered prince or princess to learn the ways of the kingdom. As Airianna noted, Rapunzel was able to learn under her parents' direction. A mentor could fulfill a similar function, like Josiah was guided by the high priest of his time. Tutoring is a good solution as someone else mentioned. And then there is the art of trial and error! ;)

I think you also need to consider the political structure of the country at hand. How much responsibility does the king have? Some royalty are just figureheads and have little political function, so training is perhaps academic. Other nobles have a lot of advisers that could assist them.

In Peter's Angel, which will be an alternate history colonial novel (Lord willing), Peter's father was related to a governor of a colony. So while he was comfortably middle-class, his children were raised more as commoners than royalty. So when death puts Peter's father abruptly in control of a colony, it's a shock to Peter - but he uses his common upbringing for good to be level-headed and down-to-earth, like Michael suggested.

On the contrary, Nathan was born royalty and fled from it. I'm toying around with the idea of raising him as a nobleman's son as opposed to a peasant. Part of the reason for that was to give Nathan more experience with politics. Regardless, his adoptive parents have been preparing him, at least emotionally, for the fact that he should one day retake his throne. So he knows more about royal life, particularly in the form of memories from the years before his parents were killed, than he's willing to admit.

Oh yes! My little sisters have a movie called "The Princess Diaries"... (I didn't watch it! It was my little sisters!). And they had "princess lessons" in it. Tutoring would be a most probable probability!

That is a very good point, Philli. I hadn't thought of that one, actually.

Also, being raised a commoner can add a certain kind of understanding and heart for the people, I think. It just depends on how you write it. It could be a bad thing, a good thing, or totally fanciful.
