Those whom know me can attest to the fact that I am simply crazy about weapons. So much so that I have a blacksmith forge and since I was 12 I have been striving to make medieval weapons. Swords I have made plenty, spears I have also forged along with an axe or two.

In fact most of the weapons in Joe Clemons's movie A Far Fetched Fantasy 1 and 2 were made by me.

But here and now I am asking about "Super weapons". What is the most powerful weapon you would feel comfortable about giving your characters? In my book I may have too many, here is a description of each.

Ebonheart: An ancient axe, nearly seven feet long with the head of a demon "breathing" out the axe blade like a flame. It is posessed by the spirit of a demon slain by it's carrier, who speaks with it regularly and in times of need can let the spirit flow from the axe into his body releasing his other form, a hulking winged beast set aflame by infernal forces.

Etherel: A Fey blade, gold-green in color, the blade is leaf shaped (similar to most celtic blades) with the handguard appearing to be two large thorns growing from the wood of it's handle. Like most Fey weapons it is incredibly durable and eternally sharp. When swung it makes the sound of Fey pipes playing.

Wages of sin: A six foot sword, said to be the blade of the Bright one himself. Consists of a golden blade floating between the outstretched hands of a Laelin and glowing with a fierce white light. The wings of the Laelin form the handguard. A spinning globe of the earth acts as the pommel.
Can banish any shadow or demon simply by shining upon it. The sight of it bolsters hope in the hearts of the righteous and ignites fear in the hearts of the wicked.

Defiance: Blade of the Dark one, an ink black jagged sword six feet long and forged from the sins of a fallen world. Can be stopped only by Wages of sin.

Greycleave: Sword of the high king of Kellendross, Its powers are unknown being forged in forgotten ages and passed down from father to son. Several myths exist as to its power but all unfounded. Its only known power is that it can only be wielded by one with a desire to do good. It's purity sears the hands of those of evil intent.

What are your super weapons?

I only have one super-weapon, as you call them. The Dagger of Power, forged in the first age, was cursed by the Creator Himself and holds great power. I won't explain it all right here (for the purposes of brevity), but it's pretty awesome. :D

Wow Whackem! That's quite a super-arsenal you've got there. There's a sword of invincibility that I had in one of my worlds, as well as a Bow of accuracy that never misses it's mark and those are about it for my super weapons. But those were both a long time ago.

Now that, is something Jonathan should write down in his quotes book!

I had a sword that was supposed to be a super-weapon, but then I decided to have it be broken in combat. So, no fantasy super-weaons.

Sci-fi's a different story though.

Etherel sounds very cool.

That's often quoted in 'Mythbusters.' :P

I used to have a superweapon, named Epiel, but ditched it because the plot went elsewhere. I've recently considered giving a secondary character a sword that's been marinated in poison, though. :)

Good Idea, but don't call it Viperblade, That's one weapon I forgot to mention. It has two blades coming from the handle, side by side as fangs from the skae-shaped handle, and was forged only during the dark of the moon and laced with the bound souls of over a thousand deadly snakes. The very steel of this blade is poisonous.

I haven't worked much on super weapons yet, but I have a couple. I don't think it's possible to have too many super weapons Whackem. Tolkien had so many and can't even remember many of their names!

Reandil: A golden sword forged of an unknown metal about 3 1/2 ft. in length. It can never be broken and can enable the bearer to do incredible feats of agility. It is never in need of sharpening

Shadow swords: Only wielded by demons or servants of demons. They are made of solidified shadow and can bend, twist, and stretch if you know how to control them.

An unnamed gigantic sword: A blade between seven and six feet long. It requires great strength to wield and is passed from warrior king to heir in the kingdom of Taaklin. It adds strength to attacks on foes and stops you from attacking friends, literally not allowing you to go further than within an inch of their skin.

Those are all from one book and these two are from the sequel.

Darmug: The golden blade of the prince of Tormog. It is made of the same metal as Reandil, but is slightly shorter at 3 ft. It is also indestructible, but does need to be sharpened. It is the only weapon capable of killing the immortal king. It is driven by the will behind it and acts fiercely if the wielder is in a fell mood, but will not kill if the wielder does not fully wish it.

Ratak: The black axe of the the commander of Tormog's armies. It is treacherous and will taste it's master's blood before others. If it cuts into your skin, you become filled with foreboding of doom (different from fear of death).

So, some of that I just made up as I was posting. :P

I don't have much in Murel yet. But I do have one sword that plays a key part in the story. It is yet unnamed but the sword looks like an ice pheonix. The pheonix's body and feet form the handle. The pheonix's wings form the guard. The mouth forms the base of the sword and the sword is made to look like a stream of ice coming from the mouth of the pheonix.

I haven't decided, but I might have other super weapons.

I have few super weapons developed, but here are a some that I made up for this thread.

Yoh-leth:
A smooth, narrow staff of yellowish wood which looks as though it is about to split into hundreds of pieces, but cleaves through things like a sharp sword that never breaks.

It must often be submerged in water, and if any part of it is dry for long the staff will fall apart and never become whole.

Salpeidh:
A great spear of ancient make. Its head can never loosen from its haft, and the haft cannot be broken.

Lines from an ancient book appear in burn marks on the haft, and glistening marks on the spearhead, when battle is near.

If the wielder of the spear is bold and spirited, a straight beam of blue, white light falls from the spearhead and will blind blind any one mind that he is directing the beam to; and will give light in any dark, if the wielder knows his way, and no Darkness comes that is mightier than the spear (and the wielder may help the spear when this time comes, if he is strong enough).

What do you think?

 I forgot to say what made the sword super (other than its looks ;) ).

The unnamed sword can cause severe wounds to the mortal angels/mortal demons. (= Pheonix and Gryphons) Normally it takes a lot to kill a mortal angel/demon but with this sword one can cause devastating damage with each attack.

I like Suiauthon's sword, the looks and the power. What does the sheath look like?

Do you have a thread about mortal angels/ mortal demons?

I hadn't thought about the sheath yet. :P I would guess it would have the same looks as the sword. I need to think on this some more.
No I don't yet. My next project for Murel is to write the creation/fall of Murel and that would answer most questions about the pheonix and gryphons. After the creation/fall I should write something about them specifically though. :P

I haven't thought much on sheaths either...

I might just take the easy route and say the sheath is just a normal sheath, or maybe not... Hm, I'll have to think on this more. :P

After thinking over this a lot, I came to a decision.
I think the sheath is made out of a type of light, opaque crystal. *must make up a light, opaque crystal*
Does anyone know the diferent ways a sheath can be hitched to one's side?

Typically, I believe it is part of a belt, although I suppose it could have a clasp or something.

I still really like your sword, Sui :) Mainly because I just love all things phoenix :D

@Tsahraf: That staff sounds intriguing. Is there just the one? Who is responsible for dipping it in the water - does it have to be the one that wields it?

I'm planning on recruiting an HW'er to draw the sword so the rest of you can see what is in my mind's eye. ;)

There may be more than one. It does not matter who puts it in the water. They are stored in the water. I think the staff and the spear are my favorites.

I just looked at my post again, and I think it would be easier to read as separate posts instead of all one post.

Ebrehon:

A sword, silver in color, that glistens like water. It is an epee, which is like a foil, but not so thin.

When unsheathed it gives understanding of the Ezebreh language, and all of its descendant languages and dialects, and the ancient writing system of the Ezebreh.

It also gives its owner telepathic communication with one who is of pure Ezebreh blood, and a weaker communication with those who are less pure, and no communication at all with those who are less than half Ezebreh.

It never loses sharpness, and when it is broken it must be repaired by a pure blooded Ezebreh smith, or it loses its power, and the smith who dares lay tool on it is cursed with no understanding of any language, either to hear or to speak.

Blokkohf:

An indestructible falchion with a bone overlaid hilt painted brown. The color of the family Palkon is brown.

It can, by becoming a little warmer or colder in the blade, show a friend or an enemy of the family Palkon, unless the man is of the family, and then it is blind.

It can only be sharpened by being laid on a dead member of the family of Palkon, or on a babe of the family that is less than a day old.

In later years it grew in power with age, but was sometimes lost, and fewer and fewer men had the spirit of virtue and boldness that would awaken the sword's power.

But when one of the Sword's closest friends, and one of the last of the family Palkon, was slain in a quarrel with a drunkard who hated Palkon, the Sword set out as it could find a way, and guarded the last family of the name Palkon.

Wow: Ebrehon sounds amazing! Is the telepathic communication hampered by distance, I am guessing? How many Ezebreh remain in the world?

Thank you!

*makes up answers to questions*

Not by physical distance, but if the communicators are mentally distant from each other, it would be more difficult, but not impossible. A person could live next door, and he might just as well be on the other side of the world for how much you know of him. And so if you simply communicated with some one regularly, it would become easier.

No one knows....

Should I separate Yoh-leth and Salpeidh and post them up here? Leave them together? Leave them where they are?
I think I like them best.

*nods * That makes sense, I suppose. Can the sword be used as a conference, sort of? I.e, if one guy is close to six people, can the seven communicate together using the sword as a focal point? Or can the main guy only communicate with the other six individually?

I think it would be extremely hard for the owner of the sword to send out thoughts to multiple people, or receive them from multiple people, simultaneously.
They would all have to send their thoughts to the owner of the sword, and he would have to send the thoughts from any one of them to the other five. I would think it would be rather slow.

I think these are the best ones on this thread. Of their names, however, I like the name Ebonheart. Of their ideas I like Etherel a little more than I like all the others.

What are the Fey? What are their pipes like? Are they like pan pipes?

Wages of Sin is interesting. Is the blade not attached to the hilt, but moves as if it was? What is a Laelin? Are they similar to Angels? You had a good idea for the pommel.

Honestly, there are so many beautiful sword descriptions I don't know who to complement first! To Whackem, Griffin and Patrick, well done! I particularly liked Ethereal, the blade was simply beautiful in my minds eye. The shadowblades by Griffin were also intriguing.

Thanks!

-DEVELOPMENT!- Yay! New ideas below!!! Thanks Whackem!

Each of my gods who rule different things of the world (along with the lord of gods, who represents the actual God), have their one weapon. Each wields extreme power according to themselves. In the hands of anyone else it is useless.

The numbers are about seventeen and I haven't made them all yet (this is a very new idea, I just came up with it a second ago) but I know that... lets say; the god of fire: Hazor. Will probably have something such as a axe that (of course) is covered in fire that does not consume the axe (because of magic of himself) and when thrown leaves a trail of burning sulfur!

I've never really used super weapons much. My MC goes through a lot of swords because he is so hard on them.

Even though I've always kind of looked down on them (from the perspective of someone who thinks story weapons shouldn't exceed the power of its bearer, for various reasons), this thread almost makes me wish I had super weapons.

*notices something else*

How come the boys all have the coolest super-weapons?

The only unusual characteristic about any of my weapons is that with the Riders' swords (which, being Haethor-made, always fit the person they were made for and take wear better than most swords, thus lasting longer) the person using the sword (when they first unsheathe it) get a kind of...burst of images that lasts only for a few moments. They can never remember what the images were, unless they figure out that every time they kill someone they get a strong sense of deja-vu. :D

You obviously haven't been reading the same fiction I have: in Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown the only weapon (as opposed to kelar, their magic/cobha) that's more than merely a tool is "Gonturan, the woman's sword" (after which the first but internal-chronologically later book is named), with which, if I recall, Hari Crewe aka Harimad-sol brings down a mountain on her enemies.

We like super-weapons, that's why.

I still don't have any in fantasy.
