One of the few creatures I've made up are Sparths. Well, they aren't exactly creatures... but then again they are. Oh well. They aren't in the current story I'm working on. Sparths dress in completely black armor, and there really isn't much to describe about their appearance. They are treacherous men whom the sorcerer, Olgrim, turned into Sparths, which are living skeletons. Not very original? Don't ask me where I got the idea. When they are killed, they remain standing rigidly, until you cut them up, and then they fall to the ground and turn into dust. I think it would be rather spooky to kill something, and then it not fall over, don't you? What do ya'll think about the Sparths?

Definitely cool. I think you might want to put them under Races, Peoples, etc. rather than the Bestiary, but I think they fit in either. I would definitely be confused if it didn't fall over when I killed it. The issue is that the physics are a little off if say, I kill the thing as I knock it over, and it freezes in a position that isn't balanced. Of course, physics is physics and it may be that Olgrim spelled these guys such that that won't happen.

In my opinion, living skeletons are one of those things that are so natural/common to have it doesn't matter if it isn't "very original." The living-dead are a common fantasy element, everybody has them. Now if you had living dead that looked like green-holographic images, then maybe Lord of the Rings movie fans would have an issue with that.

LOL. Yeah :) There was a character in my story who had been enslaved by the Sparths all his life, and when he was rescued from one, and saw it killed, he was really scared because he didn't know it was dead :D

Wait, how would you kill it if it was just a living skeleton?

It's got life, doesn't it? There must be a way to take that life!

Although that does bring up a point: the Sparths obviously aren't normal - they're walking around as skeletons when any normal thing would be dead. Is there a special way to kill them? If bones could walk, I would think it wouldn't matter how many bones there were. . . ooh, that has some creepy possibilities.

Of course, you're the writer. If it's not in your plot for lone skeleton legs to come walking out of the forest, say they're killed like any normal being and your readers won't question you. ;) I just saw plot possibilities there.

Are they just men? No women warriors? I say because I wonder if it's possible for two Sparths to have a child Sparth. . .

I must echo Katty Roy's questions--they sound very, very, interesting.

Well, I mean like if stabbed it, the sword would just pass harmlessly through, right?

Bones can be cut - or rattled out of place. The question is; if a full Sparth skeleton can move what stops parts of the Sparth skeleton from moving? It's not like the full skeleton has a brain or muscles any more than the part.

Cool name, Laura. Forgot to mention that.

I'm just now realizing that I didn't think them through very carefully! Om, no, no children Sparths. All Sparths are traitors that the sorcerer turns into Sparths. That means mostly soldiers (men) that betrayed their king. It's their reward, and although they can't die, they can be killed. Once they're dead, though, they're dead :)

So do you just kill them by slicing up their bones? And without blood, wouldn't their bones be pretty brittle?

You can kill them by stabbing them, or cutting off their head, or whatever.

So they die the same way as anyone else?

They are killed the same way as anyone else, but they don't just die. They live forever unless they're killed. :)

Sort of like elves in LotR, except they could die from grief, too.

Yeah, I guess so. Never thought of that :) But Sparths are heartless, so they can't die of grief :)
