Post subject:  Fantasian Elementals Overview

I decided that after finishing my posts on the various types of elementals in Fantasia it would be a good idea to give an overview of elementals as a whole and how they all relate with another. This post will be a bit more exocosmic than the others, focusing on realities that inhabitants of Fantasia may or may not understand or be aware of rather than recorded knowledge of the elementals.

First off, a basic idea of what elementals are in Fantasia for the sake of clarity. More or less, they are the embodiments/spirits/guardians of the four elements: Fire, Earth, Water, and Air. They were of course created by God. Their main purpose for existence is environmental caretakers. They were initially vast in number at the beginning of the world helping to shape and guide the development of the infant world. As the races began to appear on the scene, the elementals moved gradually into the background allowing the races to step into their intended roles of rulers and stewards of the world. But because the world is a fallen world (I don't think my imagination would be able to grasp the concept of an un-fallen world), they remain in play keeping things running in some semblance of balance. Some like the pyrosaurs and the wind stallions are still fairly open around people while most of the others are more discreet and unseen unless they will it otherwise. Each type of elemental has a different sentient strength.

There are four main types of elementals in Fantasia, one fore each element:
- Pyrosaurs = fire
- Leucotheres = earth
- Aphrotheres = water
- Silphes = air

The pyrosaurs are the dragons of Fantasia. "Pyrosaur" is the Dryad name for them, while they're commonly called "drakes" or "dragons" by others. They are the most open and well-known of the elementals because all but one type of them (salamanders) have permanent physical bodies (permanent not in the sense of immortality but as in they're always in these forms as opposed to occasionally). They are most concentrated in the forests surrounding Mt. Taranis. Their sentience is emotional and they are the most fully sentient of all elementals.

The leukotheres are elementals that when in physical form appear as ghostly white creatures, mainly deer, dogs, boars, and bears. Their sentience is soulful/spiritual, and they are creatures of mystery. They populate more legends than any of the other elementals except for perhaps the aphrotheres, and it would be very close. They also seem most invested in protecting the peoples of Fantasia.

The aphrotheres are the water elementals that manifest as animals emerging from the foam of rivers or the sea, usually as either horses or dogs. Their sentience is deep/soulful hyperconscious and they are are creatures of wonder and awe.

The silphes are the ethereal air elementals that are either dazzling translucent butterflies or transparent storm-wind horses or otherworldly voices on the wind. The wind stallions are second to pyrosaurs as the most interactive elementals with people as many of them are actually the mounts of the Maruts in the ______ Mountains. Their sentience is intelligent and inspiring. Next to tending their element of air, there seems to be a communicative purpose to their existence that differs from all other elementals. I haven't quite figured them out completely yet.

And that is a quick overview of my Fantasian Elementals. Hope you like it. Let me know what you think.

In Christ,
Jordan

These are really interesting.

One question: how exactly do they protect the people? Do they save them from drowning, or something like that?

That's discussed a little more in depth in my post on Leukotheres. But short recap: Sometimes they lead lost travelers home saving them from the elements, and the white bears have been known to help guard villages in the passes under their charge from invasions.

Oh yes, I remember that. :)

Out of curiosity, why would anyone follow one of them? Do the people know about them, or something?

For the most part they're hunters chasing white deer/boar/hounds because they'd be great kills and the like. I think the people who live near the white bears are a little more aware and follow them because they know that they'll lead them home.

Griffin, glad you like them. Thank you.

I definitely enjoyed reading about your elementals, and while I have no intention of incorporating elemental races into the chief of my worlds, I do have a greater appreciation for elementals now. They were all very cool.
