Currently, I'm developing the primary language of Murel (as you might have seen elsewhere ).
I've been using this website to help me develop it (highly recommended btw) and today ran across some of what the kit has to say on gender classes in languages.
I find this perfect for Murel, since they were given this language to them by the phoenix/gryphons and the language has to place heavy emphasis on the distinction between God, man and woman, and animal.
As such I'll probably have 5 or 6 gender classes: God, male human, female human, male animal, female animal, and possibly a class for the phoenix/gryphons/angels.

Do you use gender in your made up languages? Have you thought about making a language that uses gender? (etc...)

As you know, my languages are all very under-developed. I see no point to developing them except for the wild fans. Which I don't think I'll be having. But I like your idea for the 6 classes, and I'd do all 6 and not just 5, because what else would you call the phoenix/gryphon/angels? You might even need 7 if there are male/female phoenix/gryphon/angels.

Believe me, you'll be having at least one wild fan so you had better develop them.

No, the phoenix/gryphons/angels are only one gender so I don't have to worry about that. Currently I'm leaning towards putting the angelic beings underneath the same gender as God, but somehow making a distinction between the two.

Considering the general world view at this point in time... I think it would make sense to have the 6 gender classes. After a few centuries, as world view changes, the language will change to 5 gender classes as the class for God and the class for angelic beings gets lumped together.

P'raps the gender for God was extremely formal and hard to use, so gradually people started using the easier, less formal angelic gender (that sounds...weird )

No. The main reason for the joining of the genders is because people stop placing emphasis on the difference between God and angels. (though I suppose I might have to add a gender then for differentiating between God/angels and fallen angels )


Most of the time my thoughts about pitch have been to make sentences that normally switch the order of sentence components not switch in order. But I have a lot to decide on eventually. Anything can happen.

In English when we ask a question, we switch the Verb in front of the rest of the sentence. I was thinking about fixing that with pitch and keeping the sentence order as if it was a statement. I'd continue, but that would derail the thread.

It sounds like a really neat idea. I'm not sure I entirely understand what you're trying to do, though.
I'll just give you a word of caution. If your language is going to be a big part of your stories, you'll have to explain the workings to your readers. Anything overly complicated is confusing. However, if you're doing this for you, and you'll only have a very basic couple sentences in the story itself, then by all means do whatever you want. It sounds fun.

The way I plan on working it, the language is going to be a big part in the stories, but the reader won't be able to tell. Once I do have a language up, I will use develop a name for something/someone in that language and then "translate" that name into English by changing it slightly and giving it English pronunciation.
Also, I'd like to write at least my chronicles in the made-up-language, but that is just something for me and the reader can read the English version.

I know of no language developed enough to write chronicles in. But I definitely want to see that!
