Anyone out here writing about dragons? Just courious what your dragon may look like. I find it interesting when reading books with dragons, the wide range of looks and actions that they have.
This is my dragon, or at least where he first comes up in the story I'm writing. His name is pronounced, Cuh rye oh son. He later has a nick name which is pronounced Cuh rye.

"I study it carefully and it meets my eyes with two flickering blue ones. It arches its long, graceful neck and slightly extends two cream yellow wings. It shuffles forward, still looking me in the eyes. I reach out to touch it but frills of scaly skin, attached to it's horns, and sides of its face, rise up. The two ivory colored horns catch the light as it shakes its head back and forth. Its eyes turn two shades darker and it lets out a little rumble of a growl. I want to smile because it is hard to be too scared of a creature the size of a cat. Even if it is a dragon.
I whisper in what I hope is a soothing tone, "Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you."
It comes closer and looks up at me with its head tilted to the side like a dog. I again reach out to touch it. Its eyes seem to flicker from light blue to dark and back again to light. I lay my hand on it's head.
Pain streaks down my arm in a fiery cold blast. I scream and jerk my hand away as I crumple to the floor. I curl in a ball as white hot energy floods my system. Fiery energy stabs my body and I scream again. “OHH.” I vaguely hear Francesca shouting and savage snarls, but it is just a whisper in the wave of pain. My head throbs and flashes of color streak across my vision.
Suddenly a voice pierces my mind and screams through my pain,"I Am Yours! I am Krioson!" I feel darkness sweep over me and I allow it to pull me under. "

He ends up being able to change into a humaniod form at will, and he is a sidekick like character. He is protective, likes to tease, and has magic like powers.
So, if you've got a dragon, what does he/she look like, and act like?

I've got five or six different kinds of dragons. Check out the Bestiary and the Chronicles for mine. None of them are highly developed characters.

Well, if it's dragon looking, then yes, I think it would count.
That's a neat name, Diegose.

I've had dragons in my stories...but I rarely think of a description beyond the color of scales. :P

Well,
There is size, wing span, personality (mean , good, silly), shape (long, thin, stocky, lithe, graceful, clumsy), Age (lots of ways with that), spines down the back or not, horns (many or none, and their color), a tip on the tail or not (spear tipped, round tipped,) , fire or ice breather (and other such things), how many claws per foot, any magic abilities, where they live, if you have different species then the kinds, how do they speak (mind talk, own language, only growling 'cause not intelligent, wise enough to speak anything),
Hmm,
I can't think of any more right now. The description of my dragons, seeing as they are main characters, is important to me. : )

I'm still getting used to where I'm supposed to put things! Sorry!
Sure, I don't care if you move it. Actually I had it in General Discussion at one point, but someone moved it to here to the forge.

I'll have to keep this in mind! I had quite a few dragons for major characters in my most recent NaNo, so filling out their descriptions, even if it stays only in my head, is probably a good plan. :)

I don't have any dragons with major roles (but I really want to make a story with dragons playing a major part...just...you know...need the story line  ) but I have a few dragons in my books. I usually go into great detail of what they look like since I love describing things, but they are rather difficult to describe sometimes. ;)

I have two types of dragons in To The Valley Of Dragons. It's simply the good dragons which are mostly white with a little blue and grey mixed into their coloring, and the black dragons which are evil. The play mostly a secondary but important role to what is going on in the world during what is called the Long Winter. :D

The closest thing I have to a dragon are the Zarazan. They are a semi-sapient race of carnivorous beasts and are very dangerous. They have wolf-like heads with a body similar to that of a Chinese dragon except devoid of scales, instead being smooth and always black or grey. They can live live up to 300 years. I just recently created them, so I'm not sure of all the details yet.

Thanks, I was actually inspired to create them from Japanese dragons.

I'm going to have wyverns (*shakes head* I keep talking in the future tense when I refer to my writing projects. Ah, summer.). They will be non-sentinent animals that are used by the forces of evil.

Incidently, does anyone know the difference between a wyvern and a dragon. (I probably should know that if I'm going to write about them. )

Wyverns have two back legs, but no front legs. Otherwise, they look alot like "normal" dragons. http://www.blackdrago.com/types.htm Here this may help. :dieshappy:

I think the AMPHITERE; spelled Amphiptere / Amphithere / Amphitere, are the ones without any legs at all, yet still have wings.

The Amphiptere, also spelled as Amphithere or Amphitere, has been found in European heraldry. They were particularly feared in Europe, so any person who bore an amphiptere across their shield or as part of their coat of arms would be regarded as fearsome.1

An amphiptere is literally a flying serpent, equipped with a pair of wings. They possess no other limbs. In many depictions, the wings are feathered, like a bird's wing, instead of webbed like a bat's wing.

While the Wyvern;
http://www.blackdrago.com/types.htm#wyvern
The Wyvern is a dragon with the body of a serpent, the head of a dragon (shaped like a crocodile), wings of a bat, two legs, and a long, barbed tail.13

Seen as particularly vicious throughout Europe, many legends of wyverns involved them destroying villages or traveling parties.11 The many slaying myths of wyverns perhaps explains why these dragons are particularly popular among heraldic crests and coats of arms.

Of course, since there are many dragon types, there are many sub species. And just because one is called a Wyvern, Amphiptere, Drake, or Lindworm, Wurm, or any other, doesn't mean everyone has the same dragon type in mind. ;) (I know that by experience.)

Here's the scene from one of my short stories that introduces a dragon:

<><><><><><><><><><>
Nessa jumped off the horse (her legs wobbly and sore) and, with hardly a whisper of steel on steel, drew her blade. It glittered evilly in the afternoon sun.

Her foe was a dragon. It was clearly wild, roaring and plunging enough to shame any self-respecting bull. Flames boiled the sky as the red dragon reared into the air, turning to face its new opponents. Its spikes were sharp and thorny, running along the spine to the tip of its snakelike tail, which whipped with deadly force along the ground. Its scales were a sinister dull red, gleaming impenetrably as though mocking Nessa’s sharp sword.

For a moment, Nessa wondered if she was afraid. After all, she knew virtually nothing about all this sword-swinging stuff, other than what she’d learned from that branch. And that dragon must know quite a bit about fighting. Boy, its teeth were long as daggers, and probably just as sharp. Then she shook her head, eliminating all fear from her brain. She didn’t have time to be scared.

The dragon came down with an earth-shaking thud and slowly stepped towards her. Summoning up her courage Nessa made a mad dash at one of the dragon’s front legs and struck it a blow that, though jarring her arm considerably, just glanced off. Before it had time to react she dashed to the side and, in the second of peace, scanned the dragon’s armored body. Was there a place that was actually penetrable?

That moment of thought cost her dearly. A small flame shot in her direction, singing the ground beside her. Madly Nessa stamped the grass, extinguishing any lingering fire. She swung back around and saw, for a moment, the unprotected inside of the dragon’s mouth. She gulped, then ran forward again and, reaching up, thrust at the dragon’s armpit.

This time the monster’s reflex was much quicker. One of its claws scratched her back and Nessa gasped with agony. How could a mere wound be so painful? Black clouded her vision for a moment and then, taking a huge gulp of breath, she brought her head back up and skipped off to the side, to a moment’s safety.

The underarm had worked a little bit better as far as wounding the dragon but not nearly well enough. Yes, she’d need to get either the mouth or the eyes, preferably the mouth. Nessa dodged a column of flame that evaporated before it touched the ground, her back searing with pain as though it was the one that had been burnt.

The massive, spiky tail came swishing her way and, in one instant, Nessa thought of a plan. It was stupid but, with all the luck in the world, it just might work.

:dieshappy:

Very helpful, thank you!

I have seen wyverns with shrunken front legs, but I'm guessing Nintendo didn't do their research. :P
The amphitere sounds very interesting too. I might put them in the story.

I've seen wyverns having two, four, or no legs. The word means viper so I believe it refers to the dragons with long, snaking necks. I have wyverns in my book as well.

Thanks! And oh yes, he's quite a fierce lil' thing :D . But don't worry, she does manage to secure the upper hand eventually!

It sounds like it doesn't have wings, would that be correct?

Griffin ~ wouldn't you know, I never even noticed! I thought it had wings (I mean, it is a dragon, after all!) but apparently I didn't mention any, so I guess it didn't have wings! Just goes to show how some of those "indispensable" aspects of creatures may not be so necessary after all...

I have just published book one in a seven book series about Dragons entitled The Canticles of Andurun: Dragonsong. There are a variety of them in my novels, and they range from huge and menacing with blood like fire, to aquatic creatures whose "wings" allow them to swim. One is comprised of magma and can take a solid shape at will. None of the Dragons are good, since I am using them as a symbol of evil in my writing world. I have more about them in my Bestiary at http://thecanticlesofandurun.blogspot.com. Come and visit if you like!

Neat! I really like the magma dragon Idea! :dieshappy:
It's also cool that you are a published author! I'll have to look for you books sometime, I'm always looking for dragon books to read. :)

I have very few intrinsically evil creatures, and none that are intrinsically good, which is like the way it is in the Familierworld, and it cannot be otherwise. But that is a topic for the Theology forum.

I have dinosaurs (called various names) and I have the Mandar: http://www.holyworlds.org/fantasy/viewtopic.php?f=108&t=3361
