The Sea-men, or Mer-men, in my Otherworld- which are called Orks- rise to the surface to breath, are nocturnal, and are often anti-claustrophobic, meaning that many of them love small, tight, shut up places.

They have tiny, hornlike apparatus's inside their nostrils, and secondary lips inside their mouths, especially the ones that live in deeper waters. These are to seal off the nose and mouth so that water does not force its way into the stomach or lungs, and there is also a large valve in the throat to separate the way to the lungs from the way to the stomach.

Their language consists of the thuds and groans that you can make with your lips closed and your nose pinched. I find that these sounds can usually be described as counterparts of sounds that we already know. However, tones seem to become more important, and the difference between consonants and vowels becomes less important.

Also the writing systems of the underwater people would probably be based on Braille, and Ogham, and use raised letters, because they would more often live in darkness and twilight.

What about some means of communication by sonar, whether focused or mass for longer ranged conversation?

So, can they see well in the dark?

That would be rather too general to say of them, however, their range of good or bad eyesight is far greater than land dwellers (called Lucs).



You mean communication by sound?
Sonar is scanning objects with sound, and it stands for Sound-Navigation & Ranging.

I think he means communicating using the same kind of high frequency sounds used in Sonar and used by dolphins.

I do not know what frequency that is, but it sounds interesting.

Think Dolphin squeaks and clicks.

We watched a movie from the series Explore the Wildlife Kingdom, called Dolphins, Tribes of the Sea.

The dolphins were able to scan an objects shape by sound, but they used a rather normal pitched stream of clicks.
In a Moody Science Classic movie, called The Voice of the Deep, dolphins were able to tell the difference between two different metals by their texture. But in that test the dolphins used the same clicking sound, only it got slower and deeper sounding as they scanned the correct metal.

In the Tribes of the Sea movie they also told two dolphins to do what ever they wanted, but to do the same thing at the same time. They were hoping to catch the dolphins using language to decide what to do. But the dolphins would just glance at each other, and then do the same thing at the same time.

I wonder if telepathy is easier underwater.
