So far all my characters fight with broadswords. For the strong, stocky race of Haethor, that isn't such a bad thing. But for my Elvarians with a light build and quick movements, it's not quite acceptable. I'm not very knowledgeable about weapons and so I'd like some recommendations of what my races could use. I thought about katanas for the Elvarians, but decided to make my decision based on some people with more experience. *shrug* Here I am.

Here are some physical characteristics of my races:

Humans: Typical. Average height, no unusual characteristics.
Elvarians: Tall, lithe, light build, quick movements.
Tulirans: Taller than Elvarians, lithe, slightly muscled, very graceful.
Raechal: Short, thin, quick but not graceful.
Haethor: Strong, thick, moderate height, excellent eyesight.
Sivanis: Moderate height, muscular, long limbs and excellent senses of touch, smell and taste.

Have at it, weapons people. :)

Humans: broad swords and battle axes
Elvarians: long swords and flamberges
Tulirans: Bow staffs/spears
Raechal: Kataras and stilettos
Haethor: bows and claymores
Sivanis: anything that's on fire...

That's the best I could come up with right now. Hope it helps :)

I thought fire because their heightened sense would make it easier to produce flammable things and their long limbs could keep it far enough from their bodies.

Oh, I see. I guess that would make sense. One of their customs is to burn only the greatest criminals at the stake, like the crucifixion was only reserved for the greatest criminals in Rome. I don't know if they would use it as a weapon, though. It's more of a fear-and-respect kind of deal. They like to fight with their hands, too.

I would give some suggestions, but I can't think of anything better than what's already been said.

To me, Katana's should be out for a light-weight race.

Instead, I would say recommend that the Elvarin's use two short swords or a single hand-and-a-half lightweight sword for the primary weapon. Throwing swords a longbows also make sense.

Long knives or rapiers would also be good.

Rapiers offend me with their utterly disgusting flimsiness. *dramatic hand to forehead*

Sorry ... one of my pet peeves. :P Several of my Elves actually do use long knives, but not for fighting exclusively, more as a fallback.

It would be neat to mix things up some and make elves use axes and dwarves use bows and stuff.

In Narnia the dwarves use bows and such. They don't have any elves there, but I can imagine C.S. Lewis mixing things up and giving them battleaxes. :D

*is motivated to look up weaponry on wikipedia*

Actually, in the Silmarillion, several groups of Elves prefer axes as a weapon.

I don't have any Dwarves, but the Haethor are my equivalent (medium height, stocky, good smiths, with eyesight like cats). That would be interesting. They could be good marksmen. Though, I think the weapons normally chosen for different races are chosen because they seem to fit the characteristics of the race.

Ahem. * growls * Rapiers are close to my favorite blade weapons.

The reason being that they actually aren't flimsy at all (though they aren't as strong, cutting-wise, as an axe or broadsword of course), and they are optimized for combat with the point. Fighting with the point is quite superior to edge fighting (you take a broadsword, give me a rapier, and I will beat you every time, promise you). I can explain why if you want. :)

I know why! Because I am equally helpless with a rapier or a broadsword. So, if Jay did as claimed and handed me a broadsword, I'd be like, "Huh?"

Humans (Cause we come in all shapes and sizes) can generally become masterful with any weapon.

But those of a light build and lesser strength need something with which they can dart in quickly and leap away. Such as a spear (my most favorite), dagger, stilletto as some one already pointed out, The girlyest of blades: the rapier, or perhaps the saber or the scimitar.

The short stocky type need a weapon with reach as they are generally not very fast such as Tridents, pole axes, glaives, halberds or something complimenting their strength: Hammers (Another favorite), Axes, maces, great clubs, cast iron cook-ware.

Ranged: All cultures need some kind of ranged weapon. Wether it is a crossbow as is generally preferred by the shorter types as they are two short for long bows and their great strength allows them to actually draw it back. Long bows are generally associated with the more graceful of races but I agree with Joe... It's a fantasy, blow some purist's mind.

Having read the works of Wycliff I am inclined to believe you, but rapiers do have theri weaknesess as do all weapons. But hand me a broad sword and you with a rapier and we shall see who walks away with all his limbs ;)

I'm not a weapons expert, but aren't rapiers, designed more for one-on-one encounters? Where as broadswords are better suited for battle-type situations?

Correct. Rapiers are more for a duel-type encounter. Rapiers are stereotyped as being flimsy probably because of their lack of width. They also belong to a different era than the broadsword, an era in which guns control the battlefield.

Broadswords were meant to endure the rigors of medieval warfare.

I.e. chopping through armor. Rapiers were meant to thrust through gaps in armor.

I think one on one rapier vs. broadsword. I'd probably put my money on rapier. It has more maneuverability.

(But broad swords win the awesomeness award  )
