Raechal are humanoid with large, horse-like ears.

The Raechal’s eyes are blue, green, or hazed, large and shallow in their faces with an oval pupil, often slanted.

Their hair is moderately thin, silky and with a lot of shine. It is almost always black. Often the older males prefer neat mustaches or goatees, but it is kept to a minimum. Maximum length for both sexes is to the shoulder blades.

Their noses are small and sometimes turned up on the end. Their skin is moderately dark when they are born, but they have a “reverse melanin” gene that makes it get lighter as they are exposed to the sun. It is thin and heals very quickly, but almost always leaves prominent scars.

Their emotions are close to the surface and easily readable. Their faces are very smooth and round. The ears are attached higher on their heads than humans’, are cupped and able to swivel or lie flat like a horse’s.

Their build is small but hardy, with height ranging from 4’ 11” to 5’ 10” Their hands are small but quick. If they had the idea to, they would make excellent pickpockets!

Sense of sight rated at 3, touch at 3, hearing at 4 ½, taste at 2, smell at 3. They are sensitive to very loud noises and are very claustrophobic. If confined for a long period of time they have been known to go utterly insane.

Their movement is moderately quick but lacking grace. Their agility is good as is their strength, with very good stamina. Magic is difficult for them, but they can sustain it well once it is going or if someone else activates the magic.

Their talent or gift from God is taming animals of any kind, but especially horses. They raise a special breed of shape-shifting mounts which can fly, swim, and generate light. These mounts can take the form of a Pegasus, a mer-horse, or a unicorn with a glowing horn. A young Raechal and a Shifter foal will often grow up together, forming a strong bond and a mental connection which they can use to communicate on a fairly simple level. These are trained as elite warriors, and their mounts can be controlled using only the feet, which leaves the rider’s hands free to shoot or wield their weapon of choice.

They are very conceited and will almost never admit they are wrong about anything. They are flippant, which gets them into frequent trouble with authority. They are easily deceived and influenced. Often they will believe the wrong thing in total innocence and it is very hard to convince them otherwise. They will stick to whatever they believe with astonishing enthusiasm.

They value freedom and open sky and good, honest dirt.

Their leaders are chosen by royal blood. It is always a queen. They have hot tempers, are quick to fight but also quick to forgive. War among them is not uncommon but rarely serious. Single men and women are both trained for battle. They women are assigned to protect the ruler and those inside who cannot fight, while the men are to be the leading edge of any attack. They love parties as well as fighting. Their mead has a reputation for being some of the finest.

They usually have large families.

Overall, they are a fiercely loyal, very fiery, very proud people. If you can get past their quirks, they will accept you without question. Unless you’re a Tuliran.

Now that could be interesting. Is their hair mane-like in the way it lays?

Have you considered making their eyes slightly off set? You have the large oval pupils, and if you off set their eyes they would then have a “prey animal” feel to them, which would match with their easily influenced personality. Just a suggestion. Take it or leave it. :D

Now that is totally cool! I love this feature. Very unique.

What makes them so claustrophobic? And does their claustrophobia only kick in in tight spaces or does it also happen when they are boxed in (four walled interiors and such).

Do they work with the dragon riders at all?

Okay, see, this and their claustrophobia leads me to believe they would live in very open, earthy homes. What is their habitation like?

That’s ‘cause they are smart. ;)

I never thought of it being that way, but I guess it could be.

Very interesting thought. That strikes me though as being something that would be hard to describe, though. I'll think about it. And you're going in the acknowledgements.

Like I explained with the Tulirans, it's a peculiar quirk of their race. If it has a reason, it would be because they have lived in or were made for plains and open, windy places.

It depends on whether you're talking about the race as a whole or the Carseldian population. The Carseldian population, no they don't, or at least haven't for centuries, mostly because of the racial separation ensuing the Portal War. The race as a whole, mmm, I suppose they could, but I don't have any examples of it just yet.

I see them living in large wigwam/longhouse type dwellings. They have almost no concept of privacy and several families sleep together in the same "house". They make their ceilings very high, which, since they're so short, helps a lot with the claustrophobia aspect.

Wow, those sound pretty cool (pretty, and cool)! Good job! I really like the shapeshifting mounts, and the glowing horn is a cool idea (the ultimate headlamp)! Do the horse things fight, too?

So do many of their parties end in brawling? lol :)

The horses are used as mounts in battles and are trained to fight, yes. Most of their army consists of cavalry, which is good since the Raechal as footsoldiers would be shorter than an average man by quite a bit, and if they weren't fighting Humans but Tulirans (who are over 6' on average)...well.

LOL about the headlamp. :P

Yes, inevitably lots of their parties turn into brawls. They're also not good representatives in councils:

Quote:
Varnell glanced around anxiously. One of the Raechal muttered something that sounded foul and spat to the side. Clark glared in their direction.
“Thank y’ for agreeing t’ this, your ‘ighness,” said Varnell softly, his voice rough and accented.
  Clark nodded.
“Before y’ say anythin’,” continued the Andunian, tracing a nervous circle on the inside of his wrist with one finger, “I’ll tell y’ that Her Majesty was th’ entire motivation for th’ invasion. I b’lieve none or very few of us would’ve done this if she hadn’t demanded it, Sire.”
“Needed someone to do her dirty work, eh?” shrilled one of the Raechal. The others laughed.
Clark stared somewhere above Varnell’s head, teeth clenched. “If you cannot control yourselves, you will leave the council.”
The Raechal quieted for the moment. A Haethor general coughed to cover a chuckle.

Lol, that quote reminds me of family gatherings...lol, ok, not really. But it sounds like those are going to be pretty interesting creatures to read about!

Very interesting race, and I enjoyed the illustrative quote you use just above! :book:

Not expecting there has to be, but is there an origins and/or mechanistic explanation for the horse-like features (mostly the ears, I guess) on the Raechal?

Hm, I'm not sure I'm familiar with the scale you're using here. Is it defined by comparison to a human standard? If so, what's the human rating? 3/3/3/3/3?

If I understand what you're asking about their ears, I'd say they're just created that way. ;) It's a feature they use often, though, for many are herdsmen and use their keen hearing and eyesight to watch for predators.

That's a good question. I never set a standard, I guess. 1 is poor and 5 is extreme. I'd say that rating Human senses at 3/3/3/3/3 would be fairly accurate. It's not a particularly precise scale.

If you like this race, you should check out my other four fantasy races:
Tulirans
Haethor
Elvari
Sivanis
