Alright, so, I'm working on the creatures that'll be in a novel I'm writing for school work, and clearly it is about dragons and such creatures. The dragons and other creatures seen here are to be featured in the book, but I was wondering: what do you think so far, any suggestions on new breeds, and did I miss anything?

Things you might want to know:
they are in world that mirrors ours, but you could say the mirror is severely cracked or warped like the mirrors at fun houses (in other words some things are the same as they are here on earth, but some things have been changed).

Key:
Lair Builder = what a dragon calls a human
Sharp Metals = Swords, spears and other weapons
(I have to keep thinking on these)

To do List:

Beach Hermits (currently working on)

Ice Drake

Sea Serpent

Crystal Drake

More inspirational names and thinking of more dragon breeds.

Unicorn 8D (I'm not sure if they'll even play a part in the story, but I'm like that)

Manticore

Harpy

Sphinx

Metal Dragons (Gold/Silver/Iron)
Red Dragons

Preferred Jewel:
Ruby

Scales or Skin:
Scales

Back:

Plates, Feathers, Horns or none:
Either, but plates are the most common, then comes none, then feathers, and horns are the rarest of all.

Tail:

Plates, Horns, Feathers or none:
Any of the above, the rarity is the same as for the back.

Eastern or Western Dragon:
Western

Wings:
None--they'd simply get in the way when burrowing.

Belly, Chest, and Undertail:

Large Plates or None:
Both are common.

Head:

Horns or None:
Most have horns, on rare occasions, when they mature, they might have no horns.

In most dragon tribes a red dragon without horns is considered bad luck and they are killed at once.

Plates, Horns, Feathers or None:
Tends to be the same as on the back of the dragon.

Color:

Base:
Always a fiery, blazing red that grows darker with age.

Secondary Color:
Shades of Red, Orange, Yellow, Grey, and on a rare occasion, Blue.

Designs:
Swirls and designs that look like tribal art.

Breathes:
Fire so hot that it can turn rock to lava.

Other Abilities:
Blazing heat radiates from these massive beasts. They are so hot that they can easily melt the gold and other precious metals they bathe in along with stone. Their blood is boiling hot so if another dragon punctures both its scales and skin he will get a nasty surprise: a mouthful of boiling hot blood which scalds its opponent's mouth. Along with their other traits they are excellent diggers and can make a burrow riddled with traps.

The Old Ones

Preferred Stone:
Amber

Scales or Skin:
Skin--it has the texture of tree bark.

Back:

Plates, Feathers, Horns or None:
Neither, they branches protruding from their backs with leaves and flower buds growing on them.

Tail:

Plates, Horns, Feathers or None:
Same as with the back.

Western or Eastern:
Western

Wings:
Yes--The skin there is thinner than on the rest of the body, nor is it as wrinkly.

Belly, Chest, and Undertail:

Large Plates or None:
Large Plates that are the shade of yellow that is seen on the wood inside a pine tree.

Head:

Horns or None:
Large branches are their horns. They, too, have flower buds and leaves on them.

Plates, Horns, Feathers or None:
None.

Color:

Base:
It ranges from woody brown to Mahogany to a light gray, and anything in-between.

Design Color:
A charred wood color.

Designs:
Each one has a tree on its left hind leg and a fire mark on its right hind leg. Strange thing is, they never look the same as when you last saw them.

Breathes:
No dragon knows, for they have never breathed anything for as long as any dragon can remember.

Other Abilities:
The Old Ones are the watchers of all.
There may be many dragon tribes, but all live in the realm of The Old Ones. None know of the special abilities of these massive beasts--rumors go that they are invincible or that they have the abilities of all the dragons combined. There are many more out there…but a rumor is a rumor. How should I know which is true?

History:
No one knows how The Old Ones came to rule these lands. Either the story was forgotten or all who knew it perished in "tragic accidents".

A few old she-dragon tales of how they came to rule are still floating around. Some are tales of fierce battles and end in tyrannical dragons ruling the lands, while others are tales of gentle Tree Dragons who lead a rebellion against the rulers of that time. In the end of that story, the Gentle Tree Dragons vanquished the tyrants and claimed the thrown, having been ruling the land justly since.

Which story do you think is true? All I can say is: your guess is as good as mine

Flower Dragon
or
Gardener Dragon

Preferred Stone:
Amethyst

Scales or Skin:
Skin

Back:

Plates, Feathers, Horns or None:
Plates, but this curious creature has vines and flowers growing on its back and tail that cover the plates completely.

Tail:

Plates, Horns, Feathers or None:
Plates.

Western or Eastern:
Eastern

Wings:
None

Belly, Chest, and Undertail:

Large Plates or None:
None.

Head:

Horns or None:
Horns.
Males have large, tye-dye colored frills around their necks which are used in courtship displays.

Plates, Horns, Feathers or None:
Five to nine raven black feathers run along the center of the
skull.

Color:

Base:
A dull gray is visible mainly when the dragon young, but when the hatchling grows, flowers and vines engulf (They do not grow on its head though, it is the only place visible) it and thus they live all their life.

Secondary Color:
None.

Designs:
None.

Breathes:
This strange dragon seems to breathe nothing, until soon after the area it breathed on flourishes with life.

Other Abilities:
None, apart from it being the smallest dragon of all (half the size of a lair builder).

Black/Mage Dragons

Preferred Stone:
Onyx and Diamonds

Scales or Skin:
Scales

Back:

Plates, Feathers, Horns or None:
Plates, though they often hang feathers off of their back plates

Tail:

Plates, Horns, Feathers or None:
Plates, but the tail bone of this dragon has two sets of sharp-tipped reinforced bone poking through the scales which the dragon uses as a weapon in battle.

Western or Eastern:
Western

Wings:
Yes

Scales,Skin or Feathers:Scales

Belly, Chest, and Undertail:

Large Plates or None:
Large Plates

Head:

Horns or None:
Horns. They adorn their horns with feathers as they do to their back.

Plates, Horns, Feathers or None:
None.

Color:

Base:
Black or a very dark grey.

Secondary Color:
Whatever his or her making represents

Designs:
They are unable to be seen when they are newborns but, as they mature, markings become visible. The markings represent what element they will be strongest using along with which element they shall be able to breathe.
For a dragon that would be strongest with fires a flaming mark would appear on its upper hind legs. If the dragon was strongest with poisons, there will be a twisting snake-like pattern that slowly climbs up and halts at the cheek where the snake's head rests, jaws open, poisonous fangs bared.

Breathes:
Whatever the designs represent.

Other Abilities:
Apart from their talents to master so many other abilities they have not been nicknamed "Black Mage" for nothing.

Often tamed by wizards or caught and sold on the black market to mages who practice arcane magics, the Black Dragon is one of the smaller (but certainly not the smallest) breed of dragon and one of the brightest too. These dragons are fascinated with the arts of magic and can learn it, too, which I must point out is a subject not easily learned by dragons.

Love the artistic detail! If you included an entry about general body shape, one could probably draw an accurate interpretation of each dragon from your descriptions.

I also love the Flower Dragons' breath! It reminds me of the Shishigami from Princess Mononoke, which would breathe life (and sometimes death) from its mouth, and flowers would spring up wherever it stepped, and die when it stepped away (the Shishigami was a god of both life and death). I imagine the flower dragon's breath-gardens last longer, though, right? :)

As for new breed suggestions, and anything you "missed"? First thing that comes to mind would be a Frost Drake. You can guess what they breathe! I would imagine them as having a quiet temperament, not friendly, but not hostile either; keeping to themselves in their caves high up in cold mountains or remote, frozen lands. But yeah, just a thought--do as you please with it!

Oooh, what things? Meaning a different history? Different geography? Different kinds of magic and/or physics?

Hm, is your story told partially or primarily from the perspective of dragons, by any chance? :book:

I thought I'd work on these one at a time, Lade Eve. :)

I love these, you have them so well thought out! I think it is very interesting that they burrow, so do they live underground? Why do they bathe in gold etc?

Also what do they eat? Do they hunt any specific animal to eat, or do they just eat grass, trees etc? Are they hunted at all, if so why? :)

Keep up the good work, I'll come back later and post about another one!

So, the Old Ones are rulers of both dragons and humans? Also, don't the Flower dragons and the Old Ones sound rather... similar? I think you might want to tweak a few things to maybe... distinguish them more. Question, do all of these breeds have wings?

Also... who are the Tree dragons?

I meant to put in if it was a Eastern or Western type dragon and the wing type, but I got excited I'll go fix that. Thanks so much for the complement 8D !

I've watched that movie! It was my favorite when I was young...er,but to tell you the truth I'd forgotten all about those(he was the elk right?) I just thought they sounded cute and at least one will play a large enough roll in the story.

Yes! I can't believe that one has slipped my mind(I'm also planning on doing a water dragon, nothing special but you know),I'll put a to do list up there. I'm working on a neat species that'll live there called a "Beach Hermit" they are difficult to explain so you'll just have to wait a while.

cephron wrote:

More or less same history, but different geography (you know, different geography would lead to history alterations),the trees and bushes are huge and there are different species(I'm working on the world building at the moment).

It is primarily through the perspective of a dragon/dragons.

Actually I got the ideas from a book called "We Three Dragons" and it is a collection Christmas related dragon stories. They do live underground and they eat humans or whatever else they can catch. When catching humans they act like Trapdoor Spiders in the fact that they leave gold and silver chains laying about with one end dangling down inside their lair, that way when a human pulls on it he can catch it,but when a dragon pulls the chain..well that's another story.

Well besides dragons challenging them for gold humans kill them for their scales, the scales remain hot for months so are a good way of heating houses in winter are near impenetrable.

They bathe in gold because it makes them feel somewhat safer and it reinforces their scales (I have yet to think of more reasons but you know).

They rule over just dragons. The Old Ones are not a specific breed, just a name that they earned because they have been around so long, the Tree Dragons were a breed that were wiped out (other then the six of them currently ruling/The Old Ones)during the war for the dragon throne.

The suggestion about the Flower and Tree Dragons are duly noted,I'll come up with something, but one thing is that the branches leaves and such are part of the old ones (They are like living trees) ,while with the Flower Dragons they simply have the flowers growing around them.

As said before,I'll be editing that part about the wings,I just go excited.

I hope that answers all your questions, just ask about them and I'll do my best to answer your questions.
