| Post subject: | Character Interview: Artavian Calais |
Artavian is a young man (around twenty) with dark hair and eyes. He is the second son from a wealthy family in Dunixia and is usually rather unassuming and mild-mannered. By contrast, his brother, Eridian, is a perpetual trouble-maker but as the first born. He gets away with just about everything while their father, Sebastian, keeps Artavian on a rather tight leash and provides discipline for the slightest of infringements. We meet Artavian when he is at a tavern on the edge of town in search of his brother who is again in trouble. He tries to convince his brother to come home, but there is a bit of an argument and Artavian loses his temper and tries to punch his brother in the head. Eridian is used to this sort of thing and ducks out of the way so that Artavian accidentally strikes the most dangerous person in the tavern; a man with a dragon for a friend. Sebastian quickly hears of this and does not hesitate to offer the stranger restitution by giving Artavian into his service as a slave. Though he is treated rather well, this event took Artavian's usually calm and pleasant demeanor and turned him gloomy and pessimistic. He serves faithfully, but has taken the turn rather hard and seems to have given up on himself entirely. |

Would he try to escape if the chance presented itself? If he were to see his brother again, would he forgive him or attack him? What is he most afraid of? If he were to be freed, what would he do in his freedom? |

Artavian considers himself honor-bound to serve his master and does not consider running away an option. I'm not sure he would do either. Unless his master and father agree to reverse the action at any point in time, he is now in a separate sphere and would not consider himself worthy to speak to his brother since he is now a slave. He was most afraid of disappointing his father... He isn't sure what he fears now. He would either attempt to return home or remain to serve his master in whatever capacity he were allowed. |

What is his greatest strength? Weakness? Does he ever regret losing his temper? |

His greatest strength and weakness would be his sense of duty to others. He regrets it every waking moment. |

Is he bitter towards his brother? What is his greatest desire? |

No, he blames himself for the whole ordeal. His greatest desire is to have his father forgive him and find some way to bring him home. |

Does he have many friends that he is not able to have contact with now? Does he feel shamed by the change in his position in society? Does he put much heart into his work? Does he clash with anyone of the household? |

Yes, he was well respected if not popular in his circle and was actually betrothed. Yes. Deeply. His work is about the only thing he puts heart into now since it is the only thing he can actively do to express himself. His master doesn't have a household. He is a rather aloof man that lives a nomadic life. |

Nope; he is depressingly subservient. His master is a reasonable man though, so he isn't ordered to do anything that would further disgrace him. |

Does he have any hope for future re-entering of his past society? Does he find any enjoyment in his new position? |

He wishes he could, but it can't really be considered a hope, because he thinks it is completely impossible. For the most part, no, since it reminds him how far he has fallen, but his master did once ask him to play the flute (a skill he learned well under a tutor) which at least put him more at ease since it was something he could do without having to check himself and make sure he was acting within his station. |
