Here's a creativity exercise that I posted on the facebook group and decided would make a good Quest. Dig into the childish part of your imagination and come up with the most impossible situation (a city where people grow like plants and walk on air) you can that a young child would have no problem imagining. Got it? Now imagine a world where that's possible. What life be like? What would the people be like.

Just supposed to be a fun little exercise to play around with. Write as little or as much as you want about this. Who knows, you might in the process come up with the premise for your next book. ;) Be sure to share your results with us here. And if you come up with a really developed idea, then post it in the Scholar's Hall and just post the link here. Have fun!

In Christ,
Jordan

Situation: A world of rainbows, hidden meadows, leprechauns, fairies, and being able to fly

Result: Life wouldn't be like ours, but rather, more imaginative, more carefree. Anything could happen. They wouldn't have to worry much about problems, but instead could enjoy the beauty and magic of the world. Plus, they could fly anywhere.

Oh come on Varon, :P You can put more thought into it than that, and you and I both know it  ;)
What would a world like that really look like?
Do people live there other than leprechauns and fairies or is it solely their world? Would the constant rainbows really make its inhabitants happy and imaginative all the time? I mean, while this challenge wasn't exactly to develop a complex and functioning world, I certainly think you could dig a little deeper into this idea.

Situation: you are a Lego person in a world made of Lego. Different islands are different themes; there's a city lego island, a pirate lego island, one with castles, one with the spaceport that takes you to the space lego realm. Ships of the line and pirate frigates patrol the surface of the waters; shark-shaped submarines hunt crystals beneath the waves. You are a Jedi.

Result: Minecraft, taken to its logical conclusion as an MMOsandboxRPG.

I was busy yesterday. I was writing a review, a world-building post, and I had a math exam.

Besides, you said an impossible world that a child could imagine. That's how a child would imagine the world to be.

People would live there as well, and they'd probably spend their time wandering through the glens, looking at unicorns and what-not.

Now I'll try something more interesting.

Yeah. I said start with something a child could imagine, and then you were supposed to build on it :)

Ooh, very intriguing idea...

Situation: Imagine a world where color represented our thoughts.

What if there was a place where our emotions affected how we perceived color? For example, darker would (obviously) be a more "bad" thought, while lighter would be "good." And then, different colors themselves would signify different emotions as well. At birth, we take a mix of the color-emotions of our parents, but as experiences happen and we live our life, our interpretation of emotions changes colors, so to speak.

So, maybe to me extreme anger is represented as a light purple, while to you it's a deep crimson red? Misunderstandings would abound. Every thing you say may be seen in a different color by someone else, and if it has the same color, it may have a different meaning. Paintings would reveal much about how a person views the world, but only if you have a similar mindset as the artist already...thus creative expression would be limited.

Everyone's true interpretation of colors can gradually be reflected in their writing and actions, thus it is usually only extremely close friends who understand a person's viewpoint.

Also, stoplights would be impossible. :D

Great exercise! :D Since I'm already juggling the development of multiple stories I'm not sure how epic I'll be at this... but I'm subscribing so I remember to try. :D

I am imagining the world of Nyxo where there is no sight. The atmosphere is extremely thick and moist and because of this, very little light from the sun comes through anyway. Because of this the weather is very rainy, and humid, and warm.

Since there are no books, these people have developed a system of writing similar to braille, and also use a system of knots to send shorthand messages. Morse code is being experimented with as well.

The people who live there don't paint, or sketch, or worry about visual beauty. They sculpt a little bit, but their main artform is music. The music in Nyxo is so developed and so diverse and so expressive of pure emotion that there is nothing like it in this world. Singing and poetry is also a huge part of their culture. Some of the most esteemed people are bards.

Friendship in Nyxo is less superficial than it sometimes is in our world. People don't choose their friends based on what they look like, but based on what they are like.

Nessa- She's given up the veil, the vows she'd sworn, abandoned every effort to conform. Without a word to anyone she's gone her way alone, a dove escaping back into the storm.

Nolan- And though I don't understand why this happened, I know that I will when I look back someday, and see how you've brought beauty from ashes, and made me as gold purified through the flames.

Azriel- And who do you think you are, running round leaving scars, collecting your jar of hearts, and tearing love apart? You're gonna catch a cold from the ice inside your soul, so don't come back to me. Don't come back at all...

Location: No; where is YOUR location?
Everyone doesn't have legs but walks ne'theless. We breath by putting on and taking off a hat. And eat by absorbing jello (which is all that is eaten) through the tops of our feet. Our bodys are awake at day but our souls materialize during the night. Books are the only way knowledge can be obtained, and everything in the whole world is triangular and this color!

How's that for impossible?

A world just like ours, except everyone had a companion creature that could change its size at will. So, while at school your 5in white tiger would curl up in the hood of your hoodie and doze, waiting for when the two of you could be outside, and he would grow to be 7 feet long and would carry you at great speeds through the mountains...

What's that? Did I actually daydream this in middle school to make boring classes pass faster? Well now that you mention it... ;)
