Well, I felt sort of lazy just throwing this out here and waiting for help, so I thought I'd come up with a framework or something. I researched language-building and model languages online, found some great resources, and I got started. It's not a totally original language, as you'll see, but it's OK for a first try, I guess. Thanks, Merashath, for helping me out with it. Using Uzbek grammar, custom characters, and custom pronunciation, Merashath and I have come up with a language for my country of Qaluros. Almost all of the letters are typable using a normal keyboard and only some have a weird accent over them. This will be explained, eventually. Basically, my brother and I wanted to create a model language, so we started with a basic framework of letters from the Uzbek language, and vague pronunciation ideas. We also ended up using Uzbek grammar. Because of speaking Portuguese fluently, the final pronunciation is a mix of Uzbek, Portuguese and Thai style languages, but with a few extra rules. There are twelve vowels. Vowels with a ^ over them are influx vowels (And just for reference, an influx character is spoken as if it were a question word For example, Â would be pronounced 'Eh?' Questions are asked with a special word ending) and generally go at the end of a word. When an influx vowel is at the end of a word, it pushes emphasis to the end of the word. When there is more than one influx vowel, no influx vowels, or an influx vowel that is not at the end, emphasis remains at the end. (Creating interesting sounds, like Thai) Vowels with an ´ over them are open vowels similar to romance languages such as Portuguese or Romanian. (É or Ó). Most consonants remain exactly the same as in the English language, such as F, V, B. Others are dipthongs. Letters with tails on them are two-sound words, such as Ҙ ('ZH') and Ç ('CH'). Other tail letters that aren't digraphs are letters that are very similar to the letter without a tail, such as L ('N'), Ļ ('ng') and T ('L' as in 'life'), Ţ ('L' as in 'table'). Tailed letters and their non-tailed correspondents do not generally correspond to the same latin letter. Here's the alphabet: E (short E) É ('E' as in 'egg'. Alternately, for Portuguese speakers, É as in 'pé') Ê (influx short E) A ('Ah') Â (influx long 'A') Ú ('OO' - only used when beginning a word) U ('OO' – used everywhere except when beginning a word, where it is 'YU') Û (influx long 'OO') O (as in 'O') Ô (influx long 'O') Ó (open 'O' as in Awe) Î (influx long 'E') D ('D') F ('F') J ('J') K ('K') N ('T') P ('P') G ('G') R ('R', unless 'rr' when it is rolled) B ('B') V ('V') Ç ('CH') L ('N') Ļ ('ng') S ('S') Ş ('SH' as in 'shell') T ('L' as in 'life') Ţ ('L' as in 'table') З ('DZ') Ҙ ('ZH') H (Soft 'H' as in 'house') Ң (Hard 'H' as in 'Bach') Sentence structure is the same as in Uzbek. It is possible to write Derrâ in English sentence structure and form, but not recommended. We haven't tried it in English, but who knows, it may work! A sentence follows the SOV structure (Subject, Object, Verb). For example, here is an example sentence in Derrâ: fo-BÊ çon - DÂ . rain fall - ing . (continuous) Or, alternately, the same sentence in past tense. fo-BÊ çon - DOÊ . rain fell . (past tense) The hardest part to learn about Derrâ is the sentence order and the word endings. Even harder, my brother and I actually haven't written them all in Derrâ so for the time being we're using the Uzbek equivalent....but hopefully we'll have at least two hundred common words in Derrâ by the end of the week. Anyways, hope that made some things clear...if you want to ask questions or maybe learn more (dare I hope?) just PM Merashath or I or reply to this thread. Thanks! eruheran |

(I just re-edited my entire old post and deleted it to put a whole new post in. Hope that's OK?) |
