![]() Musa paradisiaca Banana bud - Karnaba by smallislander, on Flickr This is an opportunity for you. To my knowledge no one has yet attempted to do this. You could be the first; set a meme. Simple: write a Banana as a non-ludicrous, significant part of a story. You do not have to post the story here, just talk about how you did it, or post quotes or links. It was done with apples: they have figured in the the mysterious and noble, the dark and the holy, the high and the vile, the rich and the destitute. This is your chance to do the same with the banana. And about time too. Some things about bananas to help you. First the term "banana tree" is like the name "starfish". I will not say that it is incorrect, but it can give people who have not seen a banana tree the wrong idea. It is not technically a tree, or a shrub. It has no wood. It is actually the largest herb, like a flower. Another thing that is important is that it only grows near the equator. And they are hard to transport long distances. Unless there are large groups of people with advanced technology it is not likely that you would see them far south or north. Anyway there are plenty of Fantasy stories set in northern type regions, there should be more stories incorporating equatorial countries. What is the color of vengeance? Many would say it is red, as the blood of your fallen foes, or sanguine as the dagger lying cold, the deed being done and the scene fled, leaving the lifeblood of the fallen to dry and crack upon the murderous blade. Some may say black, As the night in which it is taken, or in reference to the foulness of the deed, seething with the evil and vile corruption with which it is borne. Though some, a select enlightened few would say aureate, or yellow as it is now known. None see it, none know it. For all who have had even the briefest encounters with it no longer remain to bear witness to the horror. For none who cross the Silent Banana live to tell the tale.

Er... Ha! Well, congratulations, I was thinking I made some mistake and no one would post on the thread! You did give a good example of how the ludicrous is very deeply ingrained into English speaking peoples thinking of the banana. So that no one mistakes the purpose of the challenge, I was meaning something along the lines of the Silmarils, or the Forbidden Fruit, or the Tree of Protection. The Ancient Nation on the Earth of the Trumpeter (in other words the most important and focused on people) are an equatorial people, thus it would be natural for the banana to take the place of the things one hears so much of in the northern based stories. |
