| Everyone has probably read a book with quotes at the beginning or end of each chapter. I think I want to do this, but I don't know many quotes. Can y'all help me out (and anyone else who needs quotes)? Song lyrics, famous people's quotes; you can even quote your friends and family, or yourself. | |

| Just any. This isn't specifically for me; it's for other people who need them too. And so far I have 26 chapters that need quotes, so whatever quotes you have will probably work somewhere. "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." -Eleanor Roosevelt That's one of my favorites, and the only one I can think of right now. | |

When one brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened," Billy Graham I have a ton more, but the problem is pulling them out of my head on command... | That title sounds like something I would say, without even realizing it, and then wonder why people were laughing at me. I don't have extra money right now. And I'm not going to sit there and type out all the quotes in a book. This is just a place for people to dump any quotes they remember or come across.

| *has found a bunch of cool quotes* "Come t'e' picciol fallo amaro morso!" "What grievous pain a little fault doth give thee!"-Dante Das Werk lobt den Meister. (German) The work proves the craftsman."-Madeleine L'engle “To stake one's life for the truth.”-Madeleine L'engle "“Welcome, Prince,” said Aslan. “Do you feel yourself sufficient to take up the Kingship of Narnia?” “I - I don't think I do, Sir,” said Caspian. “I'm only a kid.” “Good,” said Aslan. “If you had felt yourself sufficient, it would have been a proof that you were not…”"-C.S. Lewis, Prince Caspian “The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places. But still there is much that is fair. And though in all lands, love is now mingled with grief, it still grows, perhaps, the greater.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings “It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings “Pay heed to the tales of old wives. It may well be that they alone keep in memory what it was once needful for the wise to know.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings “The world is indeed full of peril and in it there are many dark places.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings “You shouldn't believe everything you hear. You're young, not stupid.” -Terry Brooks, The Wishsong of Shannara Okay, so they're mostly from books... Still awesome quotes though. And here's one from a HWer we know and love. We were Skyping when he took a bite of a burnt potato, and this is what he said: "Well, that's a new flavor..."-Solomon Soldier We were cracking up. "Fezzes are cool."-Matt Smith in Doctor Who | |

| When I've seen this device used to best effect (at least in fantasy and SF), it's usually been quotations (bits of verse, proverbs, etc.) attributed to the characters or culture portrayed in the book itself, rather than from our culture ... Lord Tarin wrote: “A room without books is like a body without a soul.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero I'm sorry to have to say that this quote is apocryphal, falsely attributed to Cicero (see here and here, for example). | |

I LOVE books with quotable passages, LoTR being one of the best. However, I've found that they are more compelling if you let them enter the natural flow of the text instead of forcing them in just because you like the way they sound or have your heart set on adding them. Just a thought.

| “Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains ... an unuprooted small corner of evil. Since then I have come to understand the truth of all the religions of the world: They struggle with the evil inside a human being (inside every human being). It is impossible to expel evil from the world in its entirety, but it is possible to constrict it within each person.” And “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” --Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn | |
